Seoraksan Fall Foliage 2026: First Colors Arrived

Seoraksan is the first place most Koreans check when autumn arrives. For Seoraksan fall foliage in 2026, the first colors were officially recorded on September 28, four days earlier than 2025 and right on the long-term average.
But “first foliage” and the postcard peak are different things. If you are planning a trip, aim for mid-to-late October and check the live foliage status just before you leave.
What “First” and “Peak” Really Mean

Korea’s weather agency calls it “first foliage” when about 20% of a mountain has turned, starting from the summit down. “Peak” means about 80% has turned.
- 2026 first foliage: September 28
- Average first foliage: September 28
- 2025 first foliage: October 2
- Average peak: October 17
- 2025 peak: October 24
Peak dates vary every year, so treat any exact date you see online as a guess. Based on the average (October 17) and the 2025 peak (October 24), mid-to-late October is the realistic window.
Timing Depends on Altitude

This is what most people miss. Seoraksan rises from the low Seorak-dong Sogongwon area to Daecheongbong at 1,708 m, so the color does not arrive all at once. It starts on the summit and ridges and slowly works down to the valleys.
In early October, expect color mainly on the high ridges. By mid-October it reaches mid-altitudes, and from mid-to-late October easy-access spots such as Biseondae, the valleys and Gwongeumseong are at their best. For a family trip rather than a hike, mid-October onward is the sweet spot.
With Kids, the Gwongeumseong Cable Car Is Easiest

The most practical way to enjoy Seoraksan fall foliage with kids is to combine Sogongwon Park with the Gwongeumseong cable car. The boarding area is about five minutes’ walk from the Sogongwon entrance, and the ride delivers granite peaks and autumn color without a long climb.

2026 round-trip fares:
- Adults (middle school and up): 16,000 won
- Children (37 months to elementary): 12,000 won
- Under 36 months: free
There are no advance bookings; tickets are sold on the day. Operating hours change with the weather, and strong winds can stop service, so check the Seorak Cable Car website on the morning you go, especially at peak season.
Up for a Walk? Biseondae and Ulsanbawi

Seoraksan National Park has trails to Ulsanbawi, Biryong Falls, Geumganggul Cave, Yangpok, Baekdamsa Temple and Suryeomdong, all graded by distance, slope and surface.
With kids, choose by stamina rather than ambition. Sogongwon, the area around Sinheungsa Temple and the cable car are low effort. Biseondae is a good next step. Ulsanbawi’s summit is a real climb, not a stroll, so think about your child’s hiking experience first. Afternoon temperatures drop quickly in autumn, so pick a colorful section and walk only as far as you need.
Parking During Peak Foliage
Parking is the biggest headache at peak season. According to Sokcho City’s September 2026 data, the free B1/B2 lots hold 520 cars and the C1/C2 lots hold 1,500. The Sogongwon parking lot (about 900 spaces) is privately run.
Sogongwon is closest for the cable car, Sinheungsa and Biseondae, but on autumn weekends leave home ready to use the B or C lots.

Because Sogongwon is private, check the current fee when you visit.
Jujeongol and Heullimgol in South Seorak

Beyond Sogongwon, the Namseorak (south Seorak) side has beautiful valley trails, especially Jujeongol and Heullimgol.
Heullimgol again requires reservations this autumn: from October 1 to November 30, 2026, the 3.1 km section from the Heullimgol Visitor Center to Yongso junction is reservation-only, open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in October. Book through the Korea National Park reservation system before you go.
When to Go for Seoraksan Fall Foliage

In 2026, the first foliage was confirmed on September 28. Given the average peak of October 17 and the 2025 peak of October 24, mid-to-late October is the smart window, though temperature, rain and wind all change the pace.
Instead of locking in a predicted peak date, check the Korea Meteorological Administration’s live foliage report two or three days before departure; it shows each major mountain’s stage with photos.
For a family day without hiking, Sogongwon → Sinheungsa → Gwongeumseong cable car makes a perfect half day.

Add Biseondae if your family enjoys walking, or Jujeongol or a reserved Heullimgol hike for a dedicated foliage trek. Seoraksan fall foliage began on September 28; what matters most is how far down the mountain the color has reached.

If you are visiting after mid-October, check the live foliage report, trail closures and cable car operation right before you go.
