Why Visit the Tongdosa Buckwheat Field

Planning an autumn trip to Yangsan? The Tongdosa buckwheat field belongs on your autumn list. In late September 2026, reports showed the flowers near full bloom, and that year Tongdosa Temple also hosted a heritage media art show, so you can do flowers by day and the temple by night.
One thing first: the field is not right next to the main hall. It sits on the way to Geungnakam Hermitage, in the Jangbatteul area, so set your navigation accordingly.
A Sea of White Flowers

Buckwheat is about the whole field, not single blooms. White flowers spread beneath Yeongchuksan with ridgelines and old pines behind, a very different scene from a city flower park. Reports from September 27–29, 2026 showed it at or near peak, though conditions change fast with weather. In 2026 some sections were divided rather than filled edge to edge, so expect a slightly different look from past years.
Location and Parking
Parking at the main temple lot and walking to the field can mean backtracking; head for the Jangbatteul area toward Geungnakam. Tongdosa admission has been free since May 2023, but driving inside costs 3,000 won for compact cars, 6,000 won for mid-size cars and 15,000 won for large vehicles. The temple is open 08:30–17:30. On weekends and holidays the grounds’ lots get very busy, and the temple directs visitors to the Tongdo Fantasia lot and temporary lots, so go in the morning at peak bloom.
What to Do with Kids

There are no rides or kids’ facilities, so make it a nature-and-history route: buckwheat field, temple and forest path. Take photos from the marked paths rather than walking into the field. At Tongdosa, share a fun fact: it is the “Buddha jewel” temple among Korea’s three jewel temples, enshrining relics of the Buddha, which is why there is no Buddha statue in the main hall. Ask kids, “Why is there no statue here?” and watch them get curious.
Walk the Mupung Hansong Pine Path

Do not stop at the flowers. The Mupung Hansong path runs about 1 km from Mupunggyo Bridge along the Cheongnyudong valley, lined with pines 100–200 years old. It is mostly flat and easy with kids, and after the flowers it feels like a completely different world.
Stay for the Evening Media Art

The 2026 National Heritage Media Art at Tongdosa, “Tongdo, Reaching Stillness,” runs September 28 to October 18. Starting from the pine path, it tells the temple’s history, nature and architecture through light and projection, extending to Gwaneumjeon and the main hall. Our plan: buckwheat field in the afternoon → Tongdosa → dinner → media art.
Nearby: Seounam and Geungnakam

Seounam Hermitage is famous for its 3,000 ceramic Buddhas and wildflower gardens, adding variety beyond temple buildings. Geungnakam is on the same road as the field, so combine them instead of driving elsewhere. The pine path is part of the Tongdosa experience too, and kids remember the walk far more than another photo.
How to Plan Your Day
Flowers alone take 1 to 1.5 hours; with Tongdosa, half a day; with the media art, afternoon into evening.

In early October 2026 you can catch both the buckwheat and the media art. Remember the Tongdosa buckwheat field is nature, not a scheduled festival, so check bloom status if you go after mid-October.

Our Yans World route: buckwheat field → Geungnakam and Seounam → Tongdosa → pine path → dinner → media art. Flowers, forest, a UNESCO World Heritage temple and a night show in one day.
