Cheonan K-Culture Expo: Why Go Early

Looking for a weekend outing with kids in Cheonan? The Cheonan K-Culture Expo is worth arriving for right at opening. As of the 2026 edition, its closing day packed in a children’s musical, K-webtoon and K-pop experiences, a ramen and ice cream festa and a closing concert. One key tip: don’t rely on the expo’s general hours. On the closing day, the theme exhibition closed at 4 p.m. and the K-food, K-webtoon and K-pop pop-ups at 5 p.m., so families should start by 10 a.m.
Cheonan K-Culture Expo Basics
The 2026 Cheonan K-Culture Expo ran five days, September 2–6, at the Independence Hall of Korea (1 Dongnamgu Mokcheon-eup, Cheonan), with free entry. Its theme, “K-Culture at the Center of the World,” made it less a music festival than a culture-industry fair of food, webtoons, traditional culture, hanbok, toys and technology. The venue matters too: kids can explore Korea’s independence movement and then see how Korean culture has spread worldwide, history and pop culture in one trip.
Why the Cheonan K-Culture Expo Works for Kids

Many local festivals stop at shows and food. At the Cheonan K-Culture Expo, kids join in. The K-pop pop-up uses AI and XR to simulate an idol debut: choose a position, get styled, make a debut song, photocards and album art, a hit with K-pop-loving elementary kids. The K-webtoon hall shows featured artists, Chungnam creators and contest winners, with robot-arm caricatures, live drawing, character performances, quizzes and photo zones. Not into K-pop or webtoons? Head to K-Playground, built with EBS and the Korea Toy Association, for toy exhibits, hands-on play, photo zones and goods.
Activities Not to Miss

The “K-Lifestyle in Everyday Life Around the World” exhibition shows K-beauty, K-food and K-pop in Paris, New York, Bangkok and London, with K-lunchbox making, K-pop song quizzes and beauty activities. On the closing day it closed at 4 p.m., so enter by 2 p.m.

The K-food hall covers kimchi, fermented sauces, traditional kitchens, jar culture and master artisans, with tastings of hangwa sweets and sikhye that can run out early. The ramen and ice cream festa is the kids’ favorite: the history of Korean ramen and ice pops, Han River–style ramen cooking, instant ramen tastings and a stamp event (giveaways are limited). Kids who love to perform can join the random-play K-pop dance and street karaoke battles in the challenge zone.
The Closing Show
The closing ceremony ran 4–5:30 p.m. on the main stage, with a traditional hallyangmu dance by the Cheonan City Dance Company and performances by Kim Yong-bin, Chu Hyuk-jin, Kim Da-hyun and Nayul.

Earlier highlights, including Davichi and a drone show at the opening, a K-rock concert with YB and 10CM, a K-OST concert and a live radio show, ran on earlier days, so check the daily lineup. To see the closing show, wrap up exhibits by 3:30 p.m.
Our Recommended Route

- 10:00 arrive and check the day’s schedule at the info center
- 11:00 children’s musical “Twinkle Twinkle Moon”
- K-Playground, then lunch and the ramen and ice cream festa
- K-webtoon hall, K-pop pop-up, K-Lifestyle exhibition
- 16:00 closing ceremony and concert
The Independence Hall grounds are huge, so even “nearby” spots take time on foot. Pick your kids’ top three zones rather than every booth.
Add the Independence Hall Exhibits?

If time allows after the Cheonan K-Culture Expo, add the permanent exhibition halls (free; March–October 9:30–18:00, last entry 17:00). Doing everything in detail is a lot for kids, so pick a hall or two for 60–90 minutes, or simply show them the Gyeore Tower and Gyeore House and add indoor exhibits if they’re interested.
Shuttle Buses Beat Parking
Parking and temporary lots open during the Cheonan K-Culture Expo, but family crowds peak at the closing. Free shuttles ran three routes (Cheonan Station/Terminal; Baekseok-dong/Cheonan-Asan Station; Dujeong/Ssangyong-dong), plus loop buses from temporary lots. On the closing day the last shuttle was 6:30 p.m. Note your return stop and last bus, and check the official timetable before leaving.
Nearby Cheonan Sights

The Independence Hall itself can fill half a day. The birthplace of Yi Dong-nyeong, president of the Provisional Government, is about 2 km away in Mokcheon-eup, an easy history add-on. Garden Hwasumok, a private garden with a bakery café about 3 km away, is a calm break (paid entry; hours vary).

For a meal, head to Byeongcheon Sundae Street at Aunae Market, where Yu Gwan-sun led the 1919 independence protest, now famous for sundae soup restaurants (check menus if your kids don’t eat sundae). With energy left, continue to the Yu Gwan-sun historic site.
