Nongga Cheorwon Review: Odae Rice Barley Bowls and Handmade Tofu Hot Pot Near Goseokjeong

Nongga Cheorwon table

Sometimes on a trip you crave a bowl of freshly cooked rice more than any fancy dish. Cheorwon is famous for clean water and great rice, so eating rice grown there is part of the fun.

Barley rice and side dishes

Nongga Cheorwon, near Goseokjeong, serves Cheorwon Odae rice mixed with barley that gets sweeter as you chew, plus a spicy tofu hot pot that soothes the stomach. If you miss a healthy countryside meal, save this one.

1. Nongga Cheorwon: The Warmth of Grandma’s House

Restaurant exterior

After the kids ran around the Goseokjeong flower fields and got hungry, we drove five minutes to Nongga. Instead of a flashy sign, its weathered exterior seemed to say, “I’m the real deal.”

Floor seating

Inside, the nutty smell of rice greeted us. The shoes-off floor seating let us stretch tired legs and sit comfortably with our child.

2. The Star: Odae Rice and Barley

“So this is what glossy rice looks like.”

Instead of plain white rice, a generous bowl of Cheorwon’s famous Odae rice mixed with nutty barley comes out.

Texture: the chewy Odae rice and the popping barley make every bite fun; even eaten plain, it gets nuttier and sweeter as you chew.

Healthy namul: the side dishes are mostly mountain greens the owner forages and prepares herself.

Every one is lightly seasoned, so the natural fragrance of each ingredient comes through.

Gochujang and sesame oil

Here’s a tip for eating it.

Don’t eat this barley rice plain.

Mountain vegetable bibimbap

Pile the namul on top, add gochujang and sesame oil from the table and mix. You’ll instantly have a healthy mountain vegetable barley bibimbap.

3. Spicy Red Broth: Tofu Hot Pot

As the bibimbap whets your appetite, the tofu hot pot starts bubbling on the burner.

If you expected a white broth, think again: this hot pot is a fiery red that makes your mouth water.

Handmade tofu in red broth

Spicy and refreshing: the clean, not heavy, heat suits adults perfectly, a great hangover cure and a pleasant way to sweat out travel fatigue. Handmade tofu: not the smooth factory kind, but rough tofu full of nutty soybean flavor that soaks up the spicy broth.

If you’re with kids, try this.

“The broth is red and spicy, so what can my child eat?” I went with my child too, so I understand.

First, the namul bibimbap.

The namul side dishes are mild and soft. Scoop some barley rice for your child, mix with namul, sesame oil and a little soy sauce, and you have a nutritious bowl. The rice is so good our child ate happily.

Second, bean curd stew.

If the hot pot is too spicy, order the bean curd stew for plenty of nutty tofu flavor. Our child loved it like a tofu soup, and at just 3,000 won extra it was a perfect kids’ meal.

(If your child is very young, bring some seasoned seaweed too.)
