When you want to escape the city and breathe the clean air of deep mountains, nothing beats Gangwon-do.

Jeongseon’s deep blue mountains clear the mind every time. Here’s our review of the Jeongseon Rail Bike, the highlight of our family trip, from booking to what to wear.
1. Jeongseon Rail Bike: When Walking Is Too Much and Driving Isn’t Enough

Traveling with kids is always a tug-of-war between stamina and keeping them interested. I wanted to show them Jeongseon’s scenery, but kids get bored just looking, and hiking worried us parents.
“Is there an easy way into nature?”
That’s how we chose the Jeongseon Rail Bike. What sealed it was the downhill course: you glide through cool air without pedaling hard.
2. Gujeolli to Auraji: 7.2 km of Healing

The Jeongseon Rail Bike runs one way for 7.2 km from Gujeolli Station to Auraji Station.

It may sound long, but the gentle downhill lets you relax and enjoy the view.
It’s one of the most popular attractions in Jeongseon, so booking ahead beats buying on site.
Visitor info and booking at the time of our visit: Gujeolli Station, 745 Nochusan-ro, Yeoryang-myeon, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do. Five departures daily (8:40, 10:30, 13:00, 14:50, 16:40), with the last run skipped in winter. Fares: 30,000 won for a two-seater, 40,000 won for a four-seater. Time: about 40–50 minutes on the bike plus about 20 minutes back by scenic train.
Booking tip: on weekends and in peak season, popular slots can sell out two or three weeks ahead, so book on the official website as soon as your dates are set.
3. Riding Through an Ink-Wash Painting

At our time slot we boarded a four-seater. Our child’s eyes sparkled while buckling up and waiting for the signal.
Fresh wind from the very start!
The air in Gangwon-do really is different. Cliffs rose on the left and the Songcheon stream flowed on the right; it felt like riding into a giant ink-wash painting.
Tunnels Keep It Fun

Endless forest might bore kids, but tunnels along the way add excitement. Our child cheered every time we passed through a tunnel decorated with colorful lights.

When we picked up speed on the downhill, the mild thrill melted away even my stress.
Barely pedaling, we zipped along with plenty of time to take in the view and chat. Few activities are this good with kids.
4. Back by Charming Scenic Train

Arriving at Auraji isn’t the end. To return to Gujeolli, you ride a scenic train instead of a shuttle bus.
A cute yellow train with a classic, romantic look that’s great for photos. A comfortable return: ride down for fun, then sit back and retrace the route slowly.

The rail bike alone might have felt short, but the scenic train completed the trip’s romance. Our child cheered “Train ride!” right to the end.
5. Practical Tips Before You Go
Even great places can be tough without preparation. Here are small but important tips from our visit.

What to wear: it’s colder in the mountains than in the city, and the headwind is chilly. Bring a light jacket even in summer, and gloves and a hat in fall and winter. Photos: staff take photos at an official photo spot, and you can buy prints at the finish; optional, but good quality as a keepsake. Restrooms: go at Gujeolli Station before departure, as you can’t stop midway.

If you’re looking for things to do in Jeongseon, the Jeongseon Rail Bike is a must.
It’s not just a ride but the best way to soak in Jeongseon’s great outdoors, satisfying kids and parents without a tiring walk. Consider a weekend in Jeongseon.
