This post was produced with support from the Samcheok Tourism and Culture Foundation.
This trip takes us to Samcheok in Gangwon-do, a city of blue East Sea views and the legacy of Silla general Isabu.
Samcheok isn’t just about the sea; it combines history, education, hands-on fun and rest.
Here are six family spots for exploring Samcheok with kids in one unhurried day.
A One-Day Samcheok Family Route
Tsunami Safety Tower, Isabu Dokdo Memorial Hall, Isabu Park, Picture Book Land, Central Market and the Children’s Science Play Center.
The route flows smoothly, with most stops 5–10 minutes apart by car, which makes Samcheok with kids easy.
Theme 1. History Meets the Sea: Following General Isabu’s Spirit
Samcheok Port Tsunami Safety Tower

Samcheok Port’s landmark, the Tsunami Safety Tower, combines safety and views.

It’s Asia’s largest marine safety facility at about 15 stories, built with structures and evacuation systems for real tsunamis.
From the observatory, the curve of Samcheok Port and the East Sea spreads out, a natural marine safety lesson for kids.

The free telescopes and kid-height viewing decks showed real thoughtfulness.
There’s an elevator, so strollers are easy,

and you can relax and gaze at the sea from the observatory.
“Samcheok’s sea is so wide and so blue”: a place that draws gasps from kids.
Isabu Dokdo Memorial Hall

The Isabu Dokdo Memorial Hall is a must when visiting Samcheok with kids.
Themed on General Isabu’s achievements and the history of protecting Dokdo,

it brings history to life with AR and VR media art.
Kids go beyond looking at exhibits to learning by doing.

A lion statue, General Isabu’s symbol, greets visitors at the entrance,
and inside you’ll find models of sea routes from the Usan-guk campaign and Dokdo nature films.

The exhibits aren’t long, so even elementary school kids stay focused,

and the 1st-floor cafe is perfect for a break with a sea view.

A small tip: if you’re with kids, don’t miss the Dokdo stamp corner.

It leaves a souvenir-like memory that kids love.
Theme 2. Childhood and Creativity: A Playground for Learning
Isabu Park

Isabu Park, themed on the legend of General Isabu’s lions, is also a favorite healing spot for locals.

Lion sculptures stand throughout against the sea,

and a wide lawn lets kids run around freely.

The bamboo path in the middle of the park catches a pleasant breeze,
and it’s a great spot to lay out a picnic mat for snacks.

On clear days, you can see the East Sea horizon in the distance,
while kids burn off energy running on the grass.
Isabu Park is next to Picture Book Land,
so it’s easy to visit both in one day.
Picture Book Land

Picture Book Land captures Samcheok’s gentle side and is a highlight of Samcheok with kids.
It’s an indoor experience hall where kids become characters in their favorite books.

Famous Korean and international picture book artists took part in the exhibits,
including a big book zone, pop-up book zone, AR/VR zone and the artist’s room.

Imaginative colors and lighting fill the space,
and kids turn pages and step into moving pictures to “read with their bodies.”

It’s indoors, so rain is no worry.
It’s connected to Isabu Park for an easy route,
and the gift shop sells limited-edition postcards and stickers by each artist.
Give your child a picture book: the trip will stay in their memory even longer.
Samcheok Children’s Science Play Center

For the last stop, I recommend the Samcheok Children’s Science Play Center.
It’s a science playground that sparks curiosity and exploration at once.

It’s divided into sensory, imagination, Techholic and creativity zones,
each packed with hands-on content to touch and operate.
For example, the “air tower” floats balls with air pressure,

a gyroscope gives a spinning ride,
and digital sensor mission games
help kids naturally learn scientific principles.

Above all, it’s about the joy of learning through play.
Kids solve their own “Why does this move like that?” questions
and experience the real fun of learning science through play.

Some activities require reservations,
so check hours and group size limits on the website before you go.
Theme 3. Samcheok’s Flavors and Warmth: Ending at Central Market

Samcheok Central Market
The perfect end to a day in Samcheok with kids is Samcheok Central Market.
Here you feel warm hospitality and local flavors that melt away travel fatigue.

The market is lined with local restaurants serving gomchi soup, jang kalguksu and sorghum pancakes,

and fresh seafood and side dish shops catch travelers’ eyes.
Don’t miss the five-day market held on dates ending in 2 and 7.
On those days, the whole market turns festive,

and exploring a traditional market with kids is educational too.
Samcheok Central Market isn’t just a marketplace
but a truly local place full of residents’ lives and warmth.
A loop around the market ends the trip on a warm note.
Samcheok: A Perfect Family Destination With History, Nature and Hands-On Fun

Samcheok isn’t just a beach town
but a destination where Isabu’s history, kids’ activities and local warmth connect naturally.
Even a short day in Samcheok with kids can be rich and rewarding,
and it becomes a heartfelt trip your child will remember for a long time.
The family trip itself was the best gift.
