Why Osaka and Kyoto Are the Best First Trip for a Parent Traveling Alone With a Child

When you travel abroad alone with your child, a few things matter most:

  • A short flight
  • Easy transport
  • Food your child will eat
  • Something parents can enjoy without burning out
  • Above all, something your child will find fun
Osaka and Kyoto with kids

Osaka and Kyoto tick every box. For a first trip abroad with just you and your child, no other pair of cities is as easy, fun and atmospheric, which is why I keep recommending Osaka with kids.

1. A Short Flight Means Less Stress

On a first trip abroad with a child, a short flight really matters.

  • Osaka is about two hours from Incheon.
  • From Gimpo it’s even shorter, about 1 hour 40 minutes.
  • It’s not much different from flying to Jeju, so kids handle it well.
Flight to Osaka

A short flight brings real advantages:

  • No jet lag
  • No long-haul fatigue
  • You can start exploring as soon as you land

Managing your energy matters when you travel solo with a child, and a short flight keeps parents fresher too.

2. Easy Public Transport

Osaka trains

The younger your child, the harder getting around becomes. But Osaka and Kyoto have excellent public transport.

  • Kansai Airport to central Osaka: 30 to 40 minutes on the Nankai Rapi:t
  • Osaka to Kyoto: about 30 minutes on a JR Special Rapid train
  • A dense network of buses, subways and JR lines
  • Discounted passes for foreign visitors, such as the Kansai Thru Pass

So is public transport always the answer with a child? Not necessarily. Taking a taxi when needed is the smart move.

Taxis in Japan aren’t cheap, but they’re worth it for short distances.

  • Base fare as of 2025: about 680 to 780 yen in Osaka and about 620 yen in Kyoto
  • The base fare covers the first 1.2 to 1.5 km, then roughly 80 to 100 yen is added by distance

Taxis are easier in situations like these:

  • Dragging a suitcase from the airport to your hotel
  • Getting back to your hotel late at night after an izakaya
  • When your child is too tired to walk from the station to the hotel

Approximate taxi fares as of 2025:

  • Namba to Osaka Castle: about 1,500 to 2,000 yen
  • Namba to Universal Studios Japan: about 3,000 yen
  • Kyoto Station to Arashiyama: about 2,500 yen
  • Kyoto Station to Fushimi Inari Shrine: about 1,500 yen

Trains and buses are excellent, but adding a taxi when your child is worn out makes the trip much easier. For short hops under 2 to 3 km, a taxi can even be the more efficient choice.

3. Japanese Food Suits Korean Kids

When you travel with a child, food that doesn’t suit them can be a real problem. Some kids only want pizza and burgers, some refuse strong flavors, and some barely eat anything that isn’t Korean.

Japanese food, though, is easy for Korean kids to enjoy. Osaka and Kyoto have plenty of dishes even picky eaters will happily eat.

Udon
Onigiri
  • Udon: soft noodles kids love
  • Onigiri: simple rice balls that are easy for kids to eat
  • Takoyaki: can be made without the octopus for kids
  • Donburi: rice bowls like katsudon, gyudon and oyakodon that aren’t heavily seasoned

Sushi also has lots of kid-friendly options:

  • Inari sushi: sweet tofu pockets kids love
  • Tamago sushi: sushi topped with savory egg
  • Wagyu sushi: beef sushi for kids who don’t eat raw fish

And Osaka is known as Japan’s food capital, so there’s no shortage of tasty things for kids to eat.

4. Parents Can Enjoy It Too

When traveling alone with a child, most parents plan everything around the kid. But a trip is only truly good when parents enjoy it too, and Osaka and Kyoto have plenty for grown-ups.

Dotonbori
Gion
Highball by the river

Small joys for parents:

  • A food crawl and izakaya hop in Dotonbori
  • A quiet stroll through Gion in Kyoto
  • A highball by the Dotonbori canal

Some me-time:

  • After your child falls asleep, tako-wasabi and a highball at a Dotonbori izakaya
  • A glass of sake with yakitori, or a late-night bowl of Ichiran ramen

Even while traveling with a child, parents can have a great time.

In the end, it’s not a trip just for your child but one that makes you happy too. It may feel like you’re traveling for your child, but you come home happier yourself. If you’re thinking about visiting Osaka with kids, just the two of you, Osaka and Kyoto are the best choice.
