As the weather turns cold, outdoor play gets harder, and staying home just means more screen time. On a trip to Hongcheon in Gangwon-do, we stumbled on a gem that both my child and I loved.

It’s the Hongcheon Life and Health Science Museum, which I’ll call Hongcheon Science Museum here, where kids explore the wonders of the human body indoors. Here’s our review and tips for this affordable, educational stop.
1. Why Hongcheon Science Museum?

As a travel creator I’ve visited countless museums, and the places kids truly get absorbed in are those where they touch and experience things and become the main character, not just look.
Hongcheon Science Museum fit that perfectly.

No weather worries: an indoor course you can enjoy rain or snow.

Amazing value: a full outing for less than an hour at a kids’ café. Hands-on senses: walk through the organs you’ve only seen in books.

Seeing your child’s eyes sparkle at the entrance, designed like a journey into the belly, you’ll be glad you came.
2. Check Before You Go: Visitor Info and Parking

Basic info: 78 Saengmyeonggwahakgwan-gil, Hongcheon-eup, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do. Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last entry 5 p.m.). Closed Mondays, January 1, and Seollal and Chuseok days; if Monday is a holiday, it closes the following day.
Admission is very cheap: adults (19–64) 1,500 won; youth and children (7–18) 1,000 won; free for preschoolers aged 6 and under and seniors 65 and over, with 50% off for Hongcheon residents.
Parking: a spacious dedicated lot right in front, free of charge. Even on a weekend there was plenty of space, so new drivers needn’t worry.
Payment tip: Hongcheon local gift certificates are accepted at the ticket office, so use up any you have left from your trip.
3. “Mom, Is This Inside Me?” Exploring the Exhibits

The museum spans two floors, and the main highlight starts in Exhibition Room 1 on the second floor. Here’s how our child reacted along the route.

1) A human body journey as a little doctor
Upstairs, an entrance like a giant mouth welcomes you, and the kids start giggling.

Five senses: giant models of eyes, nose, mouth and ears; you can step into an ear to hear how sound travels or learn how smell works, and our child marveled, “Is that what my nostrils look like?” Digestive system: the path from the esophagus through the stomach and intestines has a soft floor that feels like walking inside real organs, teaching digestion naturally through winding tunnels.
2) The miracle of life: how a baby grows
Our child spent the longest here. Month-by-month models show how a baby grows over ten months in the womb.
At the heartbeat zone, our child asked, “Did my heart go thump-thump in your tummy too?” It was so sweet, and a great way to teach how precious life is.
3) Healthy habits
Beyond body structure, there’s a solid corner on how to stay healthy.

Hand washing: a game where you defeat germs teaches why washing matters. Brushing: seeing why cavities form on a giant tooth model works like magic for getting kids to brush at home.
4. Don’t Miss the 4D Theater and Special Exhibitions
Don’t rush out after the exhibits; there’s more hidden fun at Hongcheon Science Museum.
4D theater: a roughly 15-minute animation about exploring the human body. Check showtimes and reserve at the information desk. The seats shake and wind blows, so kids love it, like an amusement park. Check on site whether it’s included or extra; it’s usually included or very cheap.

Don’t skip the health check zone on the first floor.
It has body composition analyzers, stress meters and blood pressure monitors, so parents can check themselves while the kids play. My stress level came out lower than expected; travel really is the answer.

Hongcheon Science Museum isn’t a grand, flashy museum, but it explains “our body and health” clearly at kids’ eye level.
I recommend it for families looking for an indoor attraction in Hongcheon, parents of kindergarteners or early elementary kids, anyone wanting one to two educational hours without a big ticket price, and kids curious about the body and science.
The Mugunghwa Arboretum is right next door; when the weather is milder, pair the museum with a walk there.
Wondering where to go with the kids during winter break?
Consider a weekend outing to Hongcheon Science Museum, where you can build knowledge and memories somewhere warm.
