For a first Hallasan hike with elementary kids, a round trip from Yeongsil Rest Area to Witse Oreum on the Hallasan Yeongsil Trail is more realistic than the Baengnokdam summit. No reservation is needed, but if you can’t park at the upper lot, you’ll walk an extra 2.5 km from the Yeongsil management office to the trailhead. Check your child’s stamina, parking and weather, and aim only for Witse Oreum.
Hallasan Yeongsil Trail at a Glance

The trail runs 3.7 km from Yeongsil Rest Area to Witse Oreum and 5.8 km to the Nambyeok junction. Official estimates are 1 hour 30 minutes to Witse Oreum and 2 hours 30 minutes to Nambyeok.
Starting from the management office adds 2.5 km of road to the rest area, making Nambyeok about 3 hours 15 minutes one way. Only vehicles with 12 seats or fewer can drive from the office to the rest area.
Recommended Round Trip with Kids
The simplest route: start at Yeongsil Rest Area, pass Yeongsil Valley, the Byeongpung Rock viewpoint and Seonjakjiwat, reach Witse Oreum Shelter, then return the same way.

Reservations and Fees

The official guide lists Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa as reservation-only trails. The Hallasan Yeongsil Trail needs no reservation.
There’s no entry ticket for hiking, but budget for rental car parking, gear and food.
You can’t reach the Baengnokdam summit on this trail. If the summit is your goal, look at the Seongpanak or Gwaneumsa trails, which require reservations.
Trail Entry Hours

In July and August, Hallasan trails open at 5 a.m. The Yeongsil trailhead closes to new hikers at 3 p.m., and descent from Witse Oreum must begin by 5 p.m.
Cut-off times aren’t family-friendly start times. In summer, start before 7 a.m. and aim to be down around noon.
Expected Time with Kids

On the Hallasan Yeongsil Trail, allow more than the official adult times for breaks and photos.
Sample timetable: arrive at Yeongsil Rest Area at 6:40 a.m., start at 7, reach Witse Oreum by 8:30–9, rest 30 minutes with snacks, start down at 9:30, and be back around 11:30 a.m.
With younger kids or little hiking experience, turning back at the Byeongpung Rock viewpoint is a fine plan. Getting down safely matters more than reaching the top.
Parking and Public Transport

Drivers should tell apart Yeongsil Rest Area and the Yeongsil management office. If upper access is limited or the lot is full, you may need to park at the lower office and walk an extra 2.5 km.

By bus, take No. 240 between Jeju City and Jungmun. The official guide says it’s about a 40-minute walk from the Yeongsil ticket office stop to the trailhead. The ride is about 50 minutes from Jeju City and 30 minutes from Jungmun; check times on the Jeju bus information system.
Hiking by bus with kids adds walking before and after. Save the last bus time and leave a buffer of one or two buses in case the descent runs late.
Packing and Tips for Kids

Pack ankle-supporting hiking boots, 1–1.5 liters of water, snacks and lunch, a hat, sunscreen, a windbreaker, a rain jacket, spare socks, a small first-aid kit and a power bank.
Temperatures drop quickly with altitude, and fog, wind or rain can appear suddenly. Official safety guidance also advises plenty of water, emergency food, spare clothes and staying on marked trails.
Noru Spring can dry up in dry spells, so don’t count on it for water. Pack out all trash.
Food and Cafes
Yeongsil Rest Area sells simple snacks, water and hiking supplies, but items and hours vary. Prepare water and food the day before.

After the hike, pick one restaurant or cafe with easy parking around Jungmun or along the 1100 Road, once kids have changed and rested.
Pros and Cons
The upside of the Hallasan Yeongsil Trail is a shorter route than the summit trails, with varied scenery like Yeongsil Giam rocks, Byeongpung Rock and Seonjakjiwat, and no reservation.

The downside is a steep early section, and walking distance depends heavily on upper-lot parking. Mountain weather also changes fast.
Safety Notes

Heavy rain, typhoon or strong wind warnings can close trails or trigger evacuations. Check Hallasan’s real-time trail info and the weather forecast right before you leave.
