Is there anything more healing than walking along mountainsides turned red with autumn? I’m introducing a hidden gem in Yeongdong, Chungcheongbuk-do: the Wollyubong Trail. It’s a trekking course rather than a climb, perfect if you want scenery and a relaxed pace.
Where the Moon Lingers: The Charm of the Wollyubong Trail

Wollyubong means “where the moon stays a while,” and true to its name, it’s a view even moonlight is reluctant to leave.
The great Joseon scholar Song Si-yeol praised it as one of the eight views of Hancheon. Five peaks stand like a folding screen, with the jade-colored Seokcheon (Chogangcheon) stream flowing quietly below.
The beauty of the trail is that you can take in the full view of Wollyubong without climbing the peaks. It’s easy for all ages and works as a light stroll too.
Wollyubong Trail Course Guide
The Wollyubong Trail is about 8.4 km and takes around three hours at a slow pace.
It runs from Wollyubong Square to Banyasa Temple and is divided into three themed sections, so you can walk only the parts you like.
* Section 1, Yeoul Sori-gil (2.7 km): The signature stretch from Wollyubong Square to Wonchon Bridge, with a well-built deck path along the stream. It’s the core section with the closest views of Wollyubong.
* Section 2, Sanse Sori-gil (3.2 km): From Wonchon Bridge to Wanjeong Bridge, blending forest and water paths. A barrier-free deck makes it easy for wheelchairs and strollers.
* Section 3, Punggyeong Sori-gil (2.5 km): From Wanjeong Bridge to Banyasa Temple, with rural village charm and serene scenery. Stop by Banyasa at the end for a moment of rest.
Recommended tip:
If you’re short on time, walk Section 1, Yeoul Sori-gil, out and back. Most of Wollyubong’s signature views and photo spots are concentrated there.
The Joy of Walking: Wollyubong Trail Highlights

Here are three highlights I felt walking the trail myself.
1. The thrill of the deck path along the stream
The wooden deck along the river feels like walking on water. The sound of the rapids and sunlight glinting on the gentle ripples were truly beautiful.
2. Hancheon Jeongsa, in the footsteps of Song Si-yeol
About halfway along Section 1, Hancheon Jeongsa is the pavilion where Song Si-yeol studied. Resting there and taking in the quiet scenery brings to mind the lives of Joseon scholars.
3. Ending the trek at peaceful Banyasa Temple
At the end of Section 3, Banyasa Temple sits on the slopes of Baekhwasan, and the rock slope behind its main hall resembles a tiger, earning it the nickname “the temple with tiger energy.” Stop by to end your trek with a moment of meditation.

Peak Autumn: Healing on the Wollyubong Trail
Yeongdong has a different charm in every season.
Autumn at Wollyubong shines especially bright. Walking among mountains, river and moonlight felt less like trekking and more like a conversation with nature.
Escape the city noise for a weekend and catch your breath on the Wollyubong Trail. You’ll feel the comfort nature offers as you walk.
The family trip itself was the best gift.
