When planning a trip around Korea in October, look beyond foliage hotspots to silver grass, autumn walks and historic towns. Foliage timing varies a lot by region and elevation, so match the destination to your dates.
According to 2026 data from the Korea Tourism Organization and the Korea National Arboretum, peak foliage for major tree species in Gangwon is expected around late October. So plan silver grass and historic cities for early to mid-October, and foliage trips from mid to late October.
Here are six picks that also work well with kids.
1. Minjungsan, Jeongseon (Gangwon)
In October, silver grass comes before the leaves.

For silver grass in Korea in October, Minjungsan (about 1,119 m) has an almost treeless summit covered in vast silver grass fields. According to Jeongseon County, the grass begins to bloom in late September and peaks from mid-October to early November.
The 31st Minjungsan Silver Grass Festival is officially announced for 2026, running through the autumn season (September–November).
With kids, don’t underestimate it: this is a real hike, not a stroll. It suits families with elementary schoolers who enjoy walking; with little ones, go at their pace instead of pushing for the summit.
- Best time: mid-October to early November
- Type: silver grass and hiking
- With kids: elementary school age and up

2. Seoraksan (Gangwon)
The classic late-October foliage trip.

Seoraksan is a must for foliage in Korea in October, but not every October date is peak. The 2026 forecast puts Gangwon’s peak around late October, so your date matters.
With kids, enjoy the leaves around Seoraksan Sogongwon rather than hiking to the summit.
If you plan the Heullimgol trail, prepare: the Korea National Park Service runs a reservation system in October–November. It’s 3.1 km one way from the Heullimgol center to Yongso Falls junction, about 2.5 hours, and online reservations are required.
On a first visit with young kids, skip Heullimgol and focus on the Sogongwon area.
- Best time: mid to late October
- Type: foliage, walks and hiking
- With kids: choose your route carefully
3. Daereungwon and Cheomseongdae, Gyeongju (Gyeongbuk)
The easiest history trip in pleasant October weather.

If you travel often with kids, Gyeongju is one of the most versatile spots in Korea in October. It’s not too hot for walking, and Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Gyochon Village and Woljeonggyo Bridge link up naturally — far better than learning Silla history from a book.
According to Gyeongju City, entry to Daereungwon is free (Cheonmachong tomb is a separate paid ticket), and Cheomseongdae is free too.
Try Daereungwon → Cheomseongdae → Gyochon Village → Woljeonggyo, and add Gyeongju National Museum for a full day. Seeing royal tombs, then the artifacts found in them, works great with kids.

- Best time: all of October
- Type: history, walks, family autumn trip
- With kids: highly recommended
4. Gongsanseong and the Royal Tombs, Gongju (Chungnam)
An easy October history trip from the Seoul area.

For a weekend overnight or day trip, Gongju works well. Gongsanseong Fortress and the Tomb of King Muryeong and Royal Tombs are part of the UNESCO-listed Baekje Historic Areas, and knowing Gongsanseong was the royal fortress of Baekje’s Ungjin period makes the walk far more meaningful.
The route is simple: Gongju’s recommended course links Gongsanseong, Jeminchun Stream, the royal tombs, Gongju Hanok Village and Gongju National Museum. It’s smaller than Gyeongju, so there’s less rushing.

For a Korean history trip with elementary schoolers, it pairs well with Gyeongju.
- Best time: all of October
- Type: Baekje history, walking trip
- With kids: great for learning
5. Saebyeol Oreum, Jeju
In October on Jeju, go see the silver grass.

October Jeju feels completely different from summer Jeju. The Korea Tourism Organization notes that silver grass covers Saebyeol Oreum in October.
The lower slopes are fairly flat, and the summit is about 20 minutes’ climb per the official guide — short, but steep in places, so decide based on your child’s energy. Even without the summit, the lower fields are beautiful.
It’s often windy, so bring a light jacket.
- Best time: October
- Type: silver grass, oreum (volcanic cone), Jeju autumn
- With kids: start with a walk on the lower slopes
6. Suncheon Bay Wetland (Jeonnam)
Reeds and an eco trip in one.

For flat, easy autumn walking in Korea in October, Suncheon is ideal. In autumn, huge reed fields dominate Suncheon Bay Wetland. Boardwalks through the reeds reveal tidal flat ecology, turning it into a nature lesson for kids.
The Yongsan Observatory trail is steeper, so with little ones, the reed boardwalks are plenty.
Pair it with Suncheon Bay National Garden for a full day, but allow plenty of time to do both properly. Hours and fees can change by season, so check the official website.
- Best time: October to late autumn
- Type: reeds, ecology, walks
- With kids: great for nature observation
Choose Korea in October by Date
Not every destination peaks at the same time:
- Early October: weather-proof history trips like Gyeongju and Gongju
- Mid-October: silver grass at Minjungsan and Saebyeol Oreum
- Mid to late October and after: foliage in Gangwon, including Seoraksan

With kids, I recommend Gyeongju and Gongju for walking plus learning, and Minjungsan and Suncheon Bay if scenery is the goal.
Autumn is short. Instead of waiting for one perfect foliage date, choose the scenery that fits your dates — that’s the best way to enjoy Korea in October.
