Danbo Ramen on Kokusai Street, Okinawa: Spicy Ramen, How to Order and Waiting Tips

If you’re looking for real Japanese ramen in Okinawa, I recommend Danbo Ramen.

Famous enough to win first place in a Kyushu ramen popularity contest, it’s already a legend for its deep, rich tonkotsu broth and an ordering system you can customize however you like.

I had the spicy ramen (Rekka Ramen), and after one bite I thought, this is the ramen of my life.

Danbo Ramen Kokusai Street: Location and Basics

Danbo Ramen storefront

Danbo Ramen’s Kokusai Street branch is in the Makishi area of Naha, right next to the main stretch of Kokusai Street.

It’s a 5 to 7-minute walk from Miebashi or Makishi Station on the Yui Rail, so it’s very easy to reach.

It’s open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. with no break time.

Korean menus and order sheets are available, so you’ll have no trouble even without Japanese.

Tips for Avoiding the Queue

Queue

There’s always a line at this popular spot, so timing is everything.

If possible, come right at opening around 11 a.m. for the most comfortable visit.

Waiting line

Or aim for the in-between hours of 3 to 5 p.m. for a good chance of walking straight in.

Lines also shrink late at night after 9 p.m., once Kokusai Street sightseeing winds down.

Outside the shop

There’s no waiting area, so you’ll queue on the street; bring a hat or parasol in summer.

How to Order and the Menu

Ticket machine
Order sheet

At Danbo Ramen you buy a meal ticket from the machine, then mark your preferences on the order sheet the staff give you.

You can choose noodle thickness, firmness, broth richness, spice level, green onions and more.

The Korean menu shows all the options at a glance.

The most popular dishes are the classic tonkotsu ramen and the Rekka Ramen (spicy ramen).

Rekka Ramen tops the rich tonkotsu broth with Danbo’s special spicy paste, and it’s not just hot; it adds savory depth and sweetness that’s seriously addictive.

On your first visit, I recommend double spice, light broth and thin noodles.

If you love spicy food, triple is fine, but double is just right for a first time.

There are also plenty of side dishes to enjoy with your ramen.

Honest Review: Hot Spicy Ramen, My Ramen of a Lifetime

I ordered the hot spicy ramen.

From the first spoonful, the deep tonkotsu aroma spread without any gaminess, and the smooth, lingering umami was wonderful.

The spicy paste on top was hot but not harsh, blending perfectly with the broth for a spicy flavor that kept me coming back.

The thin, springy noodles had a great texture with the broth and never got soggy, perfect to the last bite.

What I liked most was the customization.

You can adjust everything from noodle thickness to broth richness, so there’s almost no chance of disappointment.

If you worry that Japanese ramen is too salty, just tick “light” on the order sheet and you’ll be happy.

The downsides

The shop is small with mostly counter seats, so it can be a bit awkward for families.

Counter seats

Lines are still long at peak times, and the default seasoning may taste a bit salty.

Spicy ramen

Danbo Ramen isn’t just a ramen shop; it’s ramen perfected to your taste.

Rich tonkotsu broth, detailed customization and late-night hours: nothing was lacking.

If I could eat only one meal on Kokusai Street, I’d choose the hot spicy ramen at Danbo Ramen again.

It’s the kind of broth you keep thinking about even after you get home.

If you want real ramen on Kokusai Street in Okinawa, put Danbo Ramen’s Rekka Ramen on your list.
