Pork Tamago Onigiri at Naha Airport: Okinawa’s Soul Food Worth the Wait

Pork Tamago Onigiri

The meal that bookends an Okinawa trip is the Pork Tamago Onigiri at Naha Airport.

Onigiri in hand

It looks like a simple rice ball with salty Spam and soft egg tucked between rice, but one bite tells you why it’s Okinawa’s soul food.

Okinawa’s Soul Food: How Pork Tamago Began

After World War II, Spam was one of the foods that poured into Okinawa, home to US military bases.

Okinawans used it to make up for scarce protein, adding Japanese rolled egg (tamagoyaki), fluffy rice and seaweed to create an easy rice-ball meal.

That’s how the Pork Tamago Onigiri was born, known locally as “Potama” for short.

Onigiri cross-section

This simple combination became part of Okinawa’s identity, and travelers from around the world call it a must-eat in Okinawa.

Two Pork Tamago Onigiri Shops at Naha Airport

Naha Airport has two Pork Tamago Onigiri shops.

One is near the central escalator in the first-floor arrivals lobby of the domestic terminal, and the other is inside the North Food Court on the fourth floor of the international terminal.

The domestic shop is the first thing you see after landing, making it a popular first meal, but there’s always a long line.

The international fourth-floor shop has more seats and is relatively quiet, great for a last meal before your flight.

Tip:

* On arrival day, grab takeout from the first-floor shop.

* On departure day, eat at the fourth-floor food court shop before boarding for a perfect finish.

Why People Line Up: Simple but Perfect

Open kitchen

Every Pork Tamago Onigiri is made to order.

The Spam is grilled golden and freshly cooked egg is wrapped in warm rice, all in the open kitchen.

So with each bite, the warmth, the salty Spam and the sweet, soft egg melt together.

The perfect balance of salty and sweet, hard to find anywhere else in Japan, is the shop’s signature.

Tips Before You Visit

Takeout bag

1. Expect a wait!

The domestic shop usually means at least a 30-minute wait. Leave plenty of time on arrival day or before departure.

2. Mostly takeout

Seating is limited since it’s mainly takeout. The international fourth-floor food court shop is more comfortable for eating in.

3. Good for the plane

It’s neatly wrapped, so it’s easy to eat on the flight. Still, eat it soon so it doesn’t get soggy.

4. Hours

Both shops are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. (may vary by season).

It’s a simple rice ball you can find at the airport,

but one bite and I thought, “Ah, so this is why it’s the taste of Okinawa.”

The saltiness of Spam and sweetness of egg layered over warm rice made the short wait well worth it.

My child said “Mom, let’s buy this again!” after one bite, and the whole family loved it.

Whether at the start or end of your trip, one bite of Pork Tamago Onigiri brings back Okinawa’s sunshine and breeze.

The family trip itself was the best gift.
