2. Staying Like European Nobility

Stepping inside Mystery Hotel Budapest feels like time travel. Designed by renowned designer Zoltán Varró around three themes, luxury, magic and experience, its biggest draw is staying inside a historic building.

The lobby catches your eye with its grand interior, vintage lighting and classic furniture.

Columns, checkerboard patterns and symmetrical designs throughout the hotel still show traces of the Freemasons, so it felt like experiencing Europe’s hidden history firsthand.

My son even asked, “Did a prince live here?”

Walking through the arched passages, flickering candles seem to hold the secrets of past centuries. Sometimes it feels like an old mansion, sometimes a lavish palace.

3. A Family-Friendly Suite

Mystery Suite: a spacious room for families

The rooms are full of mysterious charm, just like the name.

Mystery Suite

The Mystery Suite with Sofa Bed comfortably fits two adults and one child in a spacious, classic room.

A large Mona Lisa frame greets you as you walk in, so it felt like stepping into an art museum.

The quality bedding and comfortable furniture melt away travel fatigue, and the city views from the room are lovely.

Like many upscale European hotels, the room had a bathtub, and soaking while looking out the window was very relaxing.

The room had a large water bottle, a capsule coffee machine, assorted teas and a welcome chocolate set.

There were plenty of towels. There was no dental or shaving kit, but they bring one if you call.

A spacious room and comfortable beds are must-haves for a family trip, and the queen bed plus sofa bed were perfect for our family of three.

4. Breakfast in the Great Hall

Breakfast here felt like dining in a royal banquet hall.

The Great Hall Restaurant, with its Egyptian-style chandelier and iron spiral staircase, serves a fresh and varied breakfast.

The spacious seating meant families could eat comfortably.

My son said, “A prince must have eaten here!” That’s how elegant it felt.

Great Hall tables

The Great Hall seats up to about 88 people and hosts events, and dinner is served too.

Breakfast was European style, with bacon, sautéed vegetables, smoked salmon, yogurt, salads, cakes and many kinds of bread.

Hungary is sometimes said to be the birthplace of the croissant, so be sure to try a buttery one.

My favorites were the cucumbers and peppers. Hungary is famous for paprika peppers, and they were sweeter than fruit. I lost count of how many I ate.

The apple cake and cheesecake were so good I went back several times.

Kids' breakfast

There were pancakes, hash browns and omelets for kids, and Yans enjoyed his breakfast.

5. Secret Garden Day Spa

To unwind, try the Secret Garden Day Spa, said to be the only Baroque-style garden spa in Europe, where you can relax among fountains and greenery.

It’s not large, but it has a spa with thermal water. Wear a robe and swimsuit down from your room.

  • Hours: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Traditional Hungarian massages and aromatherapy
  • Premium treatments in a classic garden setting

It was so pretty it became our photo spot. The hotel has many beautiful corners, and the spa is one of them.

Guests can use it for free, and non-guests can book and pay a fee.

In the evening, enjoy a cocktail at the Sky Garden Rooftop Terrace with beautiful night views of Budapest. It holds about 50 people, and for more privacy there’s the Sky Beach VIP Terrace with a jacuzzi and sun loungers.
