10. New York Café, the World’s Most Beautiful Café

Opened in 1894, it’s Budapest’s most famous landmark café.

Golden baroque chandeliers, marble columns and ceiling frescoes are overwhelming, and live violin music takes it to another level.

It’s pricey, but if you visit only one of the Budapest cafes, make it this one. Open 7:00–midnight.
11. Café Gerbeaud
An icon since 1858 in the middle of Vörösmarty Square. Famous as a favorite of Empress Sisi, its Sisi cake and hot chocolate are musts; reviewers call it the hot chocolate of a lifetime. Open 9:00–20:00.
12. Művész Coffee House (Artist Café)
A classic café on Andrássy Avenue, opened in 1898. Walls are lined with portraits of artists, and choosing cakes from the rotating display is a unique experience. Handy between sights. Open 9:00–20:00.
13. Párisi Passage Restaurant
A hidden gem inside a 19th-century glass arcade styled after Paris’s Galerie Vivienne. Reviewers compare it to a Harry Potter film and call it quieter and more elegant than New York Café. Great coffee and desserts, especially for couples. Open 7:00–23:00.

14. Scoop & Chimney

A specialist in Hungary’s famous chimney cake. Ratings are modest, but chimney cake itself is a must-try snack in Budapest; come for chimney cake with ice cream rather than coffee. Open 10:00–22:00.
Tips for Café-Hopping in Budapest

Most brunch cafés close around 3–4 p.m., so go early in the day.
Visit Cirkusz Café right at opening (7:30) to keep the wait short.

New York Café and Gerbeaud are pricey, so one coffee and one dessert each is plenty to enjoy them.
Párisi Passage is less known than New York Café, so it’s far more relaxed.
