Hoein Heritage Night Tour at a Glance

Looking for an autumn night festival in Chungcheongbuk-do with kids? The Boeun Hoein Heritage Night Tour is worth it because you walk an entire village with real heritage buildings, meeting Joseon history and traditional culture after dark. The 2026 edition ran three September evenings (September 11–13), 6–10 p.m., in Hoein-myeon, Boeun (main site: 42-5 Hoein-ro). Entry is free; only a few activities need booking.
Why the Hoein Heritage Night Tour Stands Out
There is no stage set. Hoein Insan Guesthouse (a Joseon government guesthouse rebuilt in 1655), the magistrate’s residence, the altar of land and grain, Hoein Hyanggyo Confucian school and Punglimjeongsa study hall all stand in the village. At night, blue-and-red lanterns, lights and goblin characters fill the lanes. The 2026 guide was the Pibanryeong goblin, turning a quiet village into a goblin playground across the “eight nights” program. Seeing a hyanggyo or guesthouse in person beats reading about it.
Start with the Goblin Stamp Tour

Build your route around the moonlight stamp tour: find hidden goblins, collect stamps in the lanes and add activities along the way. Traditional games, calligraphy, natural dyeing, intangible heritage crafts, tarot, an AI photo zone and goblin face painting are on offer, with flower gardens and night photo zones.
Book the Reserved Activities

The goblin dyeing class at Punglimjeongsa ran at 6, 7 and 8 p.m., 30 people a day, 10,000 won each. Punglimjeongsa is where Joseon scholar Park Mun-ho studied and taught. At Hoein Hyanggyo, the goblin village school and mock civil-service exam ran at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. with 15 per session; note some sessions start before the festival’s 6 p.m. opening. The 15-team moonlight camp required booking that closed in late August.

Program Changes by Day
Day one featured the magistrate’s procession and a royal-salute rite at Insan Guesthouse. Saturday had a ganggangsullae circle-dance parade, goblin busking and street shows, the easiest choice for families. The closing day reenacted the rite at the altar of land and grain and closed the festival. With kids, go Saturday, arrive early for activities, then enjoy the night views and shows.
After Dark, the Real Festival Begins

The Hoein Heritage Night Tour is all about the night, so time your visit for after sunset. Lantern-lined lanes, a media welcome gate, moonlit scenery and a rose tunnel appear as heritage buildings light up. To kids it is a goblin village; to adults, stone walls and hanok glowing in autumn.
Night Market Dinner

The Pibanryeong goblin market offers Boeun local food, food trucks, crafts, specialty products and traditional liquor, plus tteokbokki, fish cakes, sundae, mung bean pancakes and banquet noodles (menus may change). Arrive around 5 p.m. to eat first, or snack midway.
Oh Jang-hwan Literature Museum

The poet Oh Jang-hwan was born in Hoein, and his literature museum and birthplace are near Insan Guesthouse. Keep it short with kids: see the house and yard and mention that a leading 1930s Korean poet grew up in this small village. Museum by day, night tour after dark is the easiest route.
History Lovers: Samnyeonsanseong Fortress
Samnyeonsanseong, a Silla stone fortress built in 470 and said to have taken three years to build, has walls about 1.8 km around.

Joseon village life at night and a Silla fortress by day make the Hoein Heritage Night Tour a trip across eras; just save energy for the night. For photos, the 20 m Malti Pass observatory overlooks winding hairpin roads, and Beopjusa Temple (founded in 553) awaits in Songnisan if you have a full day.
Our Family Plan

Oh Jang-hwan museum → early dinner in Hoein → 5 p.m. reserved activity → 6 p.m. night tour starts → stamp tour → Insan Guesthouse and lanes → a show → night market → wrap up around 9 p.m. For a first Hoein Heritage Night Tour, aim for one activity, the stamp tour, one show and a night walk.
