On the Way to Rome’s Capuchin Crypt: Tritone and Bee Fountains in Barberini

On our way to the Capuchin Crypt in Rome, we climbed a long hill. Our starting point was far from the crypt, so the walk to the Capuchin Crypt took quite a while.

We passed the Tritone Fountain (Fontana del Tritone) in Barberini. Standing near the Quirinal Hill, it marks Piazza Barberini at the eastern end of Via del Tritone. Pope Urban VIII commissioned it, and the architect Bernini completed it in 1643. The sculpture shows Triton, god of the sea, kneeling on a shell held up by four dolphins, blowing his conch and sending water into the sky.

Nearby is another famous Barberini landmark, the Bee Fountain. Bernini designed it with a bee at its center. It was much smaller and cuter than its fame suggested.
