Orvieto With My Mom: Slow City, the Duomo and Hilltop Views

Our third stop in Italy with my mom was Orvieto, a slow city.

Orvieto old town

It’s a place for local food without pollution, the birthplace of the Slow Food movement. On the outskirts, a garden called “Orti Sociali” grows organic vegetables and fruit for nearby residents and schoolchildren.

There are a few cars, but far fewer than in other cities. Rather than a tour bus or car, get off and take the cable car up to visit Orvieto.

The mosaic-like street floors of Orvieto. There’s not a single unpretty corner in this small town. Still untouched, it had more locals than tourists, though word of mouth is bringing more visitors lately.

Traveling Italy, you see many old buildings, and people actually live in them. In Korea, buildings look shabby after 10 years, but Italian buildings are centuries old and still well preserved.

Small souvenir shops line the streets. The town is so pretty you can’t not take photos.

Following the road up through Orvieto, you reach the Orvieto Duomo.

Orvieto sits high, and this cathedral once served as the Pope’s refuge.

Orvieto is famous for white wine, so walking the streets you’ll meet many wine shops.

It’s a small town you can see fully in an hour, but a must-visit city.

It must have been election season in Italy then, with flyers everywhere! The Italian countryside seen looking down from the town.

Perched on a 195m rocky hill, the overlook is superb.

If I go to Italy again, it’s a city I’d love to visit again. Orvieto.
