Samcheok Port Tsunami Safety Tower: A Free Sky-View Observatory Over the Sea

Samcheok Port Tsunami Safety Tower

This post introduces a place where you feel both safety and wonder above Samcheok’s sea,

Towers at the port entrance

Samcheok’s new landmark: the Samcheok Port Tsunami Safety Tower.

It’s educational for a trip with kids and impressive for the whole family.

Korea’s First and Asia’s Largest Marine Disaster Prevention Facility

Twin towers

The Samcheok Port Tsunami Safety Tower isn’t just a tourist spot but a national disaster prevention facility.

After Japan’s 2011 earthquake, 49.9 billion won in national funds were invested to protect the Samcheok Port area, and it was completed in 2022.

Floodgate between the towers

Its key feature is two towers about 15 stories (39 m) tall on either side of the port,

connected by a giant floodgate 50 m long and 7 m high.

Floodgate mechanism

When a tsunami warning is issued, the gate lowers automatically to seal the port entrance,

designed to block waves up to 3.7 m high.

Samcheok Port

During Typhoon Hinnamnor in 2022,

the gate actually operated and protected the port’s fishing boats and raw fish center.

That proved the Samcheok Port Tsunami Safety Tower is a truly effective safety facility.

See the Sea at a Glance: The Sky-View Observatory

Observatory

Beyond disaster prevention,

the tower operates as a cultural space with an observatory and education center for visitors.

Sky bridge

Best of all, the observatory is free, so anyone can visit.

Head up to the third-floor observatory

for views of quiet Jeongnajin Port and the hillside lanes of Narigol Village,

with the blue East Sea horizon stretching out.

Crossing the 50 m sky bridge between the towers feels like walking on the sea.

The waves and harbor seen through the glass floor make it a top photo spot.

Learning About Safety: The Education Center

Education center

If you’re visiting with kids, don’t miss the education center.

Videos and exhibits cover real tsunami damage Samcheok has suffered,

how tsunamis work and how to evacuate in a disaster.

The records of damage at Imwon Port in 1983 and Samcheok Port in 1993

are vivid lessons that naturally teach kids how precious safety is.

It combines learning and hands-on experience, so I highly recommend it for families.

A Route to Jeongnajin Port and Narigol Village

Jeongnajin Port

Right next to the tower are Jeongnajin Port and Narigol Village.

Together they make a perfect route to feel Samcheok’s past and present.

Raw fish center

Jeongnajin Port has a live fish center and a snow crab street.

Fresh East Sea sashimi, red crab and snow crab come at reasonable prices,

making it the best meal after sightseeing.

Narigol Village

Narigol Village is an art village that revived a 1970s fishing hillside neighborhood

through urban regeneration.

Colorful roofs, narrow alleys and photo spots everywhere make it a lovely walk.

Suggested route

Visit the Samcheok Port Tsunami Safety Tower, walk through Narigol Village, then eat at Jeongnajin Port’s live fish center.

It was a perfect Samcheok day combining safety, charm and great food.
