Siheung Gaetgol Festival with Kids: Salt Fields, Mudflat Missions and Night Shows

Siheung Gaetgol Festival Basics

Siheung Gaetgol Festival: Siheung Gaetgol Ecological Park salt fields and reeds

The 2026 Siheung Gaetgol Festival ran for three days in mid-September (September 18–20). With elementary kids, the best flow links the salt-field activity, the mudflat explorer mission, the seawater pool, the swaying observation tower and the evening show.

The 21st festival was held at Siheung Gaetgol Ecological Park, open 9:00–21:30 daily during the festival. “Gaetgol” means a tidal channel: seawater flows deep inland here, and old salt-field sites remain, so you can naturally ask kids, “How did people turn seawater into salt?”

Start with the Salt Field

Kids raking salt on the salt pans

Our first pick is the salt-field activity. Kids step onto real salt pans and gather salt with wooden rakes, learning how sea salt is made. It ran all three days with 40 kids per session, free, with morning wristbands handed out from 9 a.m. Reading “sea salt” in a book is nothing like raking it yourself.

Mudflat Explorers for Older Kids

Children following a map on the mudflat explorer mission

The Gaetgol Explorers program is a map-based mission across the park with treasure hunts, eco storytelling and recreation challenges; finishers get a medal and a shoe-charm set. Sessions ran 13:00–15:00 and 15:00–17:00, at 3,000 won per person or 6,000 won per pair. A mission keeps kids focused far longer than a walk.

Bug Lovers’ Corner

Insect exhibit and diving beetle race

The insect zone (10:00–17:00 daily) had bug exhibits, close-up viewing, a diving-beetle swimming race and a roulette game, a perfect filler between salt-field sessions for little ones.

A Sea Pool Party in September

Kids floating on tubes in the seawater pool

Pack spare clothes: the Sea Pool Party offered tube play in the park’s seawater pool with a DJ and magic shows. Aqua shoes are required, so bring towels, a change of clothes and a bag for wet things.

Free Play Without Reservations

Swings and seesaws at the free play area

Popular activities have set times and limited spots, so plans can slip. “Gaetgol Is My Playground Today” (10:00–17:00) needed no reservation, with swings, seesaws and neolttwigi (Korean seesaw jumping). Drop in when kids get tired of waiting.

Hot-Air Balloons and a Puppet Theater

Hot-air balloon rising over the tidal channels

The fantasy hot-air balloon ran daily, 9:00–12:00 and 16:00–21:00, with views over reeds, salt fields and winding channels. It depends on the weather, so do not plan the whole day around it. On weekends, an old salt warehouse became a free puppet theater (11:00, 13:00, 15:00; 40 seats, first come) with a story about a black-faced spoonbill family.

Stay for the Night Show

Night performance on the salt pans with lights

The signature show “Memory of Salt, Dance of Water” started at 8:30 p.m. on the salt pans: b-boys, brass bands or popera depending on the day, then a theme performance, with the audience’s phone flashlights joining the finale. “Concert in Gaetgol” started at 6:30 p.m. before it.

Parking: A Car-Free Festival

The Siheung Gaetgol Festival is car-free, so do not drive to the gate and look for parking. Shuttles ran until 10 p.m.:

Festival shuttle bus at Siheung City Hall
  • Siheung City Hall to the festival: every 15 minutes on Friday, every 5–10 minutes on weekends
  • Oido Station Exit 2 via Baegot Lotte Mart: about every 30 minutes on weekends
  • Sincheon Station Exit 5 via Eungye: about every 30 minutes on weekends
  • Mokgam Eoullim Center: about every 30 minutes on weekends

Drivers used visitor lots in Janghyeon, Janggok and Neunggok; with kids, park at City Hall and take the shuttle.

What to Bring

The park is huge, so wear sneakers; add aqua shoes and spare clothes for the pool, plus hats and water. Do not try everything: one salt-field session, one or two favorites, free play and the night show.

Nearby Stops

Gwangokji, next to Siheung Lotus Theme Park, tells the city’s lotus story since the Joseon era; by mid-September the bloom is past its peak, so go for the walk.

Oido red lighthouse at sunset

If you skip the night show, head to Oido’s red lighthouse for West Sea views and sunset. For a slower pace, eat or grab coffee around Mulwang Lake.

Our Family Plan

09:00 arrive → 10:00 salt field → insects and playground → lunch → 13:00 Gaetgol Explorers → swaying tower and channel walk → Sea Pool or free play → 18:30 Concert in Gaetgol → 20:30 night show.
