Gangseondae Pavilion in Yeongdong: A Cliffside Pavilion Over the Geumgang River

Gangseondae Pavilion

This post introduces Gangseondae Pavilion, a hidden gem in Yeongdong, Chungcheongbuk-do, where Joseon scholars’ poetic spirit meets stunning Geumgang River scenery.

Yeongdong is known for traditional Korean music and wine, but its natural beauty is just as special.

Gangseondae, where legend says immortals came down to rest, is considered the finest of the Eight Scenic Views of Yangsan.

Gangseondae: The Immortals’ Pavilion Above the Geumgang River

Pavilion on the cliff

Gangseondae Pavilion is a hexagonal pavilion built on a sheer rock cliff.

Below, the clear Geumgang River winds past, and centuries-old pines surround it like a folding screen.

From the pavilion, the graceful upper Geumgang, rocks and forest come into view at once, like stepping into an ink painting.

Here are three things not to miss.

River view from the pavilion

1. Panoramic view from the hexagonal pavilion: the river flows gracefully beneath it, painting a different scene each season.

2. The spirit of the old pines: the pine grove around the pavilion blends with the rocks for a deep, quiet calm.

3. The night view known as “autumn moon over the pavilion”: soft lights come on after sunset, and moonlight scattered on the river is worth seeing once. I didn’t get to see the night view, but I’d love to come back for it.

A Healing Walk Along the Yangsan Palgyeong Geumgang Trail

Gangseondae Pavilion sits at the heart of the Yangsan Palgyeong Geumgang Trail.

The trail is known as an easy trek anyone can enjoy, young or old.

* Access: the usual route starts at Songho National Tourist Resort, crosses Bonggok Bridge and leads to Gangseondae.

* The thrill of Gangseon Bridge: crossing the small bridge into Gangseondae, the view that opens up feels like the climax of the trip.

* Nearby sights: combine it with other Yangsan Palgyeong spots like Yeouijeong, Hambyeokjeong and Yongam for a complete scenic tour.

The sound of the river and the scent of pines swaying in the wind as you walk are enough to clear your mind.

A Place Steeped in Joseon Scholars’ Poetry

Poems inside the pavilion

Gangseondae is more than scenery; the spirit of Joseon scholars lives on here.

Joseon-era writers composed poems here, enjoyed the scenery and connected with nature.

* Poems by Yi An-nul and Im Je: their poems hang inside the pavilion, each line reflecting the scholars’ dignity and awe of nature.

* Yeongdong County Local Heritage No. 1: Gangseondae is designated as a symbolic cultural asset and one of Yeongdong’s top historic sites.

View of the river from the pavilion

Sitting in the pavilion, watching the river and imagining the old poets’ feelings is part of the charm.
