Seonbigol Obaek Bakery

I’m sharing Seonbigol Obaek Bakery, which I stopped by on a trip to Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

As the name suggests, it’s a friendly local bakery in downtown Yeongju famous for its 500-won bread.

From the first bite, you can taste simple warmth and 40 years of baking skill.

Bakery storefront

Seonbigol Obaek Bakery is at 213-1 Yeongju-ro, Yeongju.

It’s right downtown, so it was easy to drop by during the trip.

There’s a small parking area out front, and inside is the warm atmosphere of an old neighborhood bakery.

It opens at 6 a.m. and runs until 9 p.m., closed on Thursdays, so plan accordingly.

Visiting tip:

The popular vegetable bread and apple bread tend to sell out in the morning.

If you want the smell of fresh-baked bread, go early.

Unchanging Value: The Charm of 500-Won Bread

Bread display

Even as prices keep climbing, 500-won and 1,000-won breads are still the mainstay here.

It’s not just cheap; both size and taste exceeded expectations.

Basics like donuts, soboro and butter cream bread sell for 500 won,

while 1,000-won pea bread, strawberry jam bread and red bean bread are steady favorites.

Red bean bread

The red bean bread with Korean red beans is 1,500 won, but it’s well filled and gently sweet.

The soboro bread was soft and nutty, a perfect match with coffee.

Above all, the low prices let you pick several without a second thought, which is the biggest charm of Seonbigol Obaek Bakery.

Don’t Miss the Apple Bread Made With Yeongju’s Specialty

Yeongju apple bread

The signature menu here is the Yeongju apple bread.

The filling, packed with famous Buseok apples, is fresh and not too sweet, and the kids loved it.

The bread is fluffy and moist, with a really soft texture.

Each bite releases apple aroma and leaves a fresh aftertaste.

The apple bread is nicely packaged for gifts,

making it a great souvenir from Yeongju.

Ginseng Bread and Rice Castella Made With Wholesome Ingredients

Ginseng bread and rice castella

Ginseng bread made with Punggi ginseng shows off the region’s character.

It has a gentle ginseng aroma and isn’t too sweet, and they said older customers love it.

The rice castella uses rice flour instead of wheat, so it’s easy to digest,

and regulars come back for its soft, moist texture.

Regulars’ Favorites: Salt Bread and Vegetable Bread

Salt bread, a recent trend, is one of the popular items here too.

It’s crisp outside and moist inside, with salty butter flavor filling your mouth.

With coffee, it tasted like something from a French bakery.

Another favorite is the vegetable bread.

A full vegetable filling meets soft bread,

bringing back childhood memories of snack-shop flavors.

It’s 2,000 won, but the generous filling makes it great value.

Seonbigol Obaek Bakery isn’t just a cheap bakery;

it holds Yeongju’s spirit and a baker’s philosophy.

After 40-plus years of consistent taste, it’s easy to see why locals love it.
