Maemiseong in Geoje: A Seaside Stone Fortress Built by One Man, With Photo Spots and Parking

Maemiseong

I’d like to introduce Maemiseong, an exotic seaside fortress that’s a must on any Geoje trip.

Fortress by the sea

1. What Is Maemiseong in Geoje?

It’s a place built from one man’s determination after Typhoon Maemi.

Stone walls

Maemiseong has a story behind its very name.

After Typhoon Maemi caused severe damage in 2003, a Geoje resident began stacking stones one by one so he’d never suffer that again.

Stone fortress

Over more than 15 years, he built the walls from natural stone without cement, and that is how Maemiseong came to be.

It’s not just a tourist spot but a moving place that symbolizes human patience and resilience.

Stone paths

Tip: Maemiseong has many stone paths and strong sea winds, so bring comfortable shoes and a light jacket.

2. Three Best Photo Spots at Maemiseong

① The fortress window that frames the sea

Fortress window

This is Maemiseong’s signature photo spot.

The blue sea and sky beyond the window in the stone wall look like a painting.

Photo tip: shoot from low angle upward to fill the frame with sky and sea.

② The Roman-style stone stairs

Stone stairs

Head down below the walls and you’ll find stone stairs that look like ancient ruins.

Tip: have your subject stand at the bottom of the stairs looking up to make the fortress look even grander.

③ The Mediterranean-style walkway on the walls

Walkway on the walls

The view of the Geoje sea from the top is breathtaking.

Tip: line up the horizon with the wall and shoot a backlit silhouette for a dreamy vlog look.

3. Getting to Maemiseong: Parking and Admission

  • Address: Bokhang-gil, Jangmok-myeon, Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do (search “Maemiseong” in your navigation app)
  • Admission: Free
  • Parking: Bokhang Village public parking lot (arrive early on weekends)

Timing tip: the blue sea is beautiful by day, and the sunset light is magical in the late afternoon.

Visit between 5 and 6 p.m. for the warmest colors in your photos.

4. Nearby Places to Add to Your Route

Coastal view

It would be a shame to see only Maemiseong and leave.

There are many hidden spots nearby where you can enjoy both history and nature.

  • Jangmokjin Guesthouse: a historic site preserving Joseon-era guesthouse architecture
  • Heungnam Beach: 5 minutes by car from Maemiseong, perfect for a walk
  • Nearby restaurants: we highly recommend abalone porridge or raw fish bibimbap at a seafood restaurant near Jangmok Port

Maemiseong in Geoje is more than a photo spot.

It’s where the scars of a typhoon became art, and one of the most beautiful places to see the Geoje sea.

Prices, hours and details in this post are from our visit in October 2025 and may have changed, so check the latest information before you go.
