Some places stay with you not for flashy sights but for the stories and scenery they hold, and Jeongseon in Gangwon-do is one of them. Here’s our relaxed walk at Auraji Jeongseon, where the sad tale of Jeongseon Arirang flows and a crescent moon bridge glows at night, crossing stepping stones with our child and feeling the breeze on the moon-shaped bridge.
1. Auraji Jeongseon: A Place to Rest Instead of Crowds

Traveling with kids always brings the same dilemma: famous places are packed, but very quiet places might bore the kids.
We stopped by Auraji by chance with spare time after the Jeongseon Rail Bike, and it solved that dilemma at once.
Most travelers focus on the rail bike or the market and pass right by. But the true spirit of Jeongseon hides here, where the waters meet. It’s no flashy theme park, but the sound of the gentle river and the mountain birds soothes both the child and the parents.
2. Where Two Streams Meet, and the Legend of Arirang

Isn’t the name “Auraji” pretty?
It comes from the Songcheon stream flowing down from Pyeongchang and the Golji stream from Samcheok “coming together” here.
The first thing you see on arrival is the open riverside and the unusual bridges crossing it.
Here’s a story worth telling your child.
“Long ago, a young woman and man were in love, but heavy rain swelled the river and they couldn’t meet. The song they sang out of longing became the Arirang we know.”
A statue of the maiden longing across the river actually stands on the bank. When I told our child the sad legend, they gazed at the river with a serious face. Sharing the story behind a place, not just the view, made the trip feel deeper.
3. A Photo Spot Shaped Like a Crescent Moon: Auraji Moon Bridge

The landmark of Auraji Jeongseon is the crescent moon bridge (Wolyeonggyo).
The giant moon sculpture stands out from afar and paints a picture against the blue sky.
On the bridge: you can see the whole riverside, a cool river breeze dries your sweat, and clear water flows beneath your feet. Photo spot: stand mid-bridge with the moon behind you for a shot that looks like you’re inside the moon; our child cheered, “Mom, I’m on the moon!” Night view: we visited by day, but the bridge is lit at night for an even more romantic mood, so it’s a great evening walk if you stay overnight in Jeongseon.
4. Kids’ Favorite: Crossing the Stepping Stones

The moon bridge is lovely, but our child loved the stone stepping path most, a real stone crossing rarely seen in cities.
Adventure: holding hands, we counted each stone and peered into the water for small fish. Nature play: nature itself became the playground. On days with gentle current, many kids were splashing their feet. Caution: some gaps are wide and moss can be slippery, so always hold your child’s hand; strollers can’t get across.
5. Practical Info Before You Go: Parking and Admission
Here’s the information you’ll want when planning.
Basic info: Yeoryang-ri, Yeoryang-myeon, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do (search “Auraji” in your navigation app). Admission: free. Hours: open year-round with no set limits.
Parking and facilities: free parking in the Auraji tourist complex, with plenty of space. EV chargers are available in the lot. Restrooms near the lot and in the park are well kept. Shade is scarce by the river, so bring a parasol or hat in summer, and use the Yeosongjeong pavilion to rest. The rope ferry ride used to run and depends on water level and weather; if it’s operating, give it a try (free).
6. More to Do in Jeongseon
Auraji Jeongseon takes about an hour even at a slow pace, so pair it with nearby stops.
Jeongseon Rail Bike: Auraji Station is the end point; the usual route is to ride down, explore Auraji and return by scenic train. Najeon Station café: a retro station café 10–15 minutes away by car. Jeongseon five-day market: if dates line up (days ending in 2 and 7), try kongdeungchigi noodles or gondeure rice.
Auraji Jeongseon isn’t a flashy, thrilling destination. But the calm view from the moon bridge and the stepping stones we crossed hand in hand stayed with us more than any amusement park.
If you need a pause from busy days, consider a weekend in Jeongseon. Let your worries float down the river and make a wish on the moon bridge.
