Taebaek Aurora Park With Kids: A Former Station, Snowflake Observatory and Starlight Hall

Taebaek Aurora Park entrance

Tired of the same kids’ cafés and parks? Sometimes you crave exotic scenery without boarding a plane. Taebaek in Gangwon-do has a crisp highland air and mysterious mood, and instead of the loneliness of a closed station, we found storybook charm and a thrilling observatory at Taebaek Aurora Park.

1. Taebaek Aurora Park: A Stopped Station Turned Storybook Village

Red mine cart and station buildings

My first feeling on arriving was excitement. Many old stations around Korea have become attractions, but this one felt different. The cute red mine cart and exotic station buildings by the entrance made it feel like a small mountain village in Europe.

Why do I recommend it?

Exotic photo spots: areas themed on highland stations in five countries, including the US, Switzerland and Australia, make every step look like a postcard. Curiosity for kids: walking real tracks and seeing colorful sculptures had our child thrilled.

The old Tongni Station platform and rails are preserved, so when I explained, “Trains used to run here,” our child’s eyes lit up as they tiptoed along the rails. It was so sweet I couldn’t stop taking photos.

On a clear day, the blue sky contrasts with the colorful buildings for much prettier photos.

2. Dizzying but Dazzling: The Snowflake Observatory (Eye Tower)

Snowflake Observatory tower

The landmark of Taebaek Aurora Park and the biggest reason to visit: the 49.2-meter Snowflake Observatory, also called the Eye Tower.

From below it looked merely tall, but riding the elevator up made my legs shake.

View over the Baekdudaegan ridges

The fear passed quickly: the grand ridges of the Baekdudaegan and the whole park spread beneath us were spectacular.

Observatory highlights: a skywalk section with a see-through floor, where I clung to the railing while our child strode across fearlessly and earned a round of applause; and a 360-degree panorama of Taebaek’s mountains, which after winter snow looks like a real-life Frozen.

Breathing fresh air up high cleared away the stress of parenting, and we enjoyed a healing moment together.

3. A Dream of Starlight: The Starlight Hall

Next we went to the Starlight Hall. You can’t see a real aurora by day, but here technology and art recreate the aurora and constellations.

It’s a bit dark inside, and I worried our child would be scared, but they were soon captivated by the lights and visuals.

Aurora video: dreamy footage spreads across the ceiling, with spots where you can lie back and rest. Constellation stories: themed on star myths from around the world, it naturally sparks curiosity about stars and space.

The media art held the kids’ attention, and the warm interior was perfect for escaping the cold.

4. Check Before You Go: Parking and Visitor Info

Convenience matters most when traveling, especially with kids.

Park grounds
Parking area

Basic info: open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last entry 5 p.m.); closed Mondays (the following day if Monday is a holiday). Admission was free at the time of our visit; policies can change, so check before you go, and some hands-on facilities cost extra. A large dedicated lot offers free parking.

Visit tips: a good route is parking lot, mine cart and station photo zone, Snowflake Observatory, Starlight Hall, then nearby Tongni Tantan Park. Strollers: the park is flat and easy, but some observatory sections can be awkward even with the elevator, so a hip seat or carrier helps. Nearby: Tongni Tantan Park is five minutes by car and makes a perfect half-day pairing.
