Namwon Private Stay: Bonjour Jeju

Chasing the tangerine-orchard dream in Namwon
The first worry when planning a Jeju trip is where to stay.
With kids, there’s a lot to consider: you want to avoid noisy hotels, but a poorly kept guesthouse is a worry too.
This time I wanted to fully feel the essence of Jeju.

A place where you open the window to tangerines hanging over a stone wall and wake to birdsong, with a yard where the kids can run free.

Preparing for our winter Jeju trip, our child was most excited about the orange tangerines. As an adult, I wanted something a little different.

Not a crowded tourist spot, but mornings waking to birdsong behind a quiet stone wall and a warm private jacuzzi.
Hands-on fun for the child and a restful escape for mom: could we have both?
After a lot of searching, I found the answer at Bonjour Jeju in Namwon-eup, Seogwipo.
Here’s everything about Bonjour Jeju, a 50-year-old Jeju house with modern comforts and a tangerine orchard outside the door.
Angeori and Bakgeori: A Hidden Space Behind Stone Walls

Following the navigation into a quiet Namwon village, we found Bonjour Jeju welcoming us behind a low stone wall.

It’s a renovation of the traditional Jeju layout of angeori (main house) and bakgeori (outer house), run as two private cottages.
Which one suits you?
1. For families: Angeori
We stayed in Angeori, the main cottage. The high ceiling with exposed rafters made me gasp as soon as the door opened. Through the living room windows, stone walls and tangerine trees fill the view, so just sitting on the sofa is healing. It’s spacious enough for a family of four.

2. For couples: Bakgeori
We peeked into Bakgeori, a cozy studio. The view from the bedroom window is stunning, so couples looking for quiet rest might love it even more.
Tangerine Picking Right Outside the Door

Our child ran into the yard before we even unpacked. The biggest charm of Bonjour Jeju is that it’s surrounded by a tangerine (hwanggeumhyang) orchard, in season.

Usually you have to book a farm and drive there for tangerine picking.
Here you can step out in pajamas. Take the rattan basket and scissors provided, and the yard becomes your private farm.
• A sense of achievement: our child’s face glowed while picking tangerines with tiny hands and proudly saying, “Mom, I picked this!”
• Freshly picked flavor: tangerines peeled on the spot were fresher than anything from the store.
Picking tangerines privately as a family, away from crowds, became the best memory of the trip.
Cozy Details Without the Inconvenience

If you think a renovated old farmhouse must be inconvenient, think again. The interior rivals a five-star hotel.

1. A low bed for kids
Falling out of bed is always a worry with little ones. The bedroom has a wide low bed, perfect for rolling around and sleeping with a child.

The crisp hotel-style bedding gave us a great night’s sleep.

2. Stylish appliances for mom
The kitchen has a BALMUDA toaster and an illy coffee machine.

Picture fragrant coffee and freshly toasted bread while gazing at the orchard in the morning.
3. Fragrant amenities
The bathroom has L’Occitane amenities, and even the towels smelled lovely, a sign of the host’s careful attention.
Jacuzzi With an Orchard View

The highlight of Bonjour Jeju is the jacuzzi.

Soaking in warm water in a private, screened space, with a cool head and a relaxed body, was pure bliss.
At sunset, as the orchard turned golden outside the window, the spa felt indescribably romantic. Our child played in the water while we enjoyed a glass of wine.
