Choosing where to stay took the most thought while planning our Oahu family trip.

Waikiki has plenty of upscale resorts and beachfront hotels, but with kids, a place that’s easy to live in matters more than a pretty one.

Eating out in Hawaii is expensive. Restaurants every meal blow up the budget, and meal times rarely go to plan with kids.

So we focused on Waikiki condos with full kitchens, and the one that stood out was Aston at the Waikiki Banyan.

It’s less a glamorous luxury resort and more a realistic, good-value condo hotel for a Hawaii family trip: a roomy one-bedroom layout, an in-room kitchen, a location near Waikiki Beach and easy routes with kids.
That doesn’t mean it’s perfect.

The building is older, and condition can vary by unit. But if you want a well-located, spacious Hawaii stay with a kitchen for a trip with kids, the Aston Waikiki Banyan is worth comparing.
What Kind of Stay Is the Aston Waikiki Banyan?

The Aston Waikiki Banyan is a condo hotel in Waikiki, Honolulu, on Oahu. Locals often call it simply “the Waikiki Banyan” or “the Banyan.”
The key is that it’s a one-bedroom condo suite rather than a typical hotel room, with a separate bedroom and living room, a full kitchen and a lanai (balcony). Hotel rooms with only beds can feel cramped with kids, and the separate living space here is far more practical.

If your child wakes early, you can give them a snack in the living room while parents organize bags. At night, the child sleeps first in the bedroom while adults plan the next day in the living room.

Note that privately owned condos are run like a hotel, so décor and furniture vary by unit. Some are freshly remodeled, others show their age, so check recent room photos and reviews, not just the price.
Close to Waikiki Beach: The Biggest Advantage

The Aston Waikiki Banyan’s biggest strength is location. Being close to Waikiki Beach makes beach trips with kids easy, and with towels, sand toys and spare clothes to carry, that distance really matters.

It’s central yet tucked slightly off the main drag, so it feels calmer. Too far out is inconvenient, and right in the middle of the action is tiring with kids; this sits in between.

Nearby, you can easily combine the Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, Kapiolani Park and International Market Place.

Walk the beach in the morning, visit the zoo or aquarium midday and dine in central Waikiki at night.

With kids, plans often change. They get tired, want to escape the heat or need a shower right after swimming. A good location cuts that fatigue, and the Aston Waikiki Banyan worked well as a family base camp.
A Full Kitchen Makes Real Savings Possible

A full kitchen is a big advantage in Hawaii. Units are known to include a fridge, microwave, oven, cooktop and coffee maker.

Eating at restaurants every time isn’t easy with kids. Getting ready to go out for breakfast is work, and sometimes there’s nothing they want. A kitchen in the room makes the rhythm much easier.

Stock up on fruit, yogurt, bread, cereal, drinks and simple frozen food, and you can handle breakfast and snacks in the room. With Hawaii prices, that alone eases the food budget, especially for stays of four nights or more or larger families.
That doesn’t mean cooking every day on vacation. Just covering kids’ snacks, breakfast and a light late-night bite is a big plus, and even water, drinks and fruit in the fridge help a lot.
One-Bedroom Suites Built for Families

The one-bedroom layout feels much roomier than a standard hotel, with separate bedroom and living room plus a lanai for that relaxed Hawaii feel.
Kids mean lots of luggage: clothes, swimsuits, floats, snacks, toiletries and camera gear. A separate living room keeps it organized, and the lanai is handy for wet clothes and beach gear after swimming.

Room types vary by view and floor. High-floor ocean view rooms look over Waikiki’s sea, while mountain or Diamond Head views mix mountains and city. City view or lower floors may cost less, but check view and condition carefully.

When booking, request a high floor, a remodeled unit and your preferred view. Requests aren’t guaranteed, but on a family trip they can shape your satisfaction.
$43 Daily Parking: Factor It Into Rental-Car Plans

Don’t look only at room rates when booking in Hawaii. Waikiki parking is expensive, so include it in your budget if you rent a car.
Parking at the Aston Waikiki Banyan was $43 per day, so four nights adds $172 in parking alone.
A car is handy with kids for Diamond Head, Kailua, Lanikai Beach, the North Shore and outlets. On Waikiki-only days, walking, buses or Uber are enough.
Decide whether to keep a car for the whole trip or only certain days based on your route. To trim your Hawaii family budget, recalculate rental days with hotel parking included.
Check-in was 3 p.m. and checkout noon, which made the departure morning relaxed: time to pack, eat breakfast and take one more walk around Waikiki.
Confirm the Pool and Shared Facilities Before You Go
The property is known for a pool, hot tub, barbecue area, playground and recreation deck, all attractive to families. With kids, whether there’s a pool on site greatly affects satisfaction.

Facility availability can change depending on when you visit, so confirm before booking. If the pool or recreation deck is under construction, a child expecting to swim may be disappointed.
If the pool isn’t available, plan your days around Waikiki Beach.
The beach is so close that spending time there is great, but young kids often look forward to a pool, so check in advance.
Lobby Café and Nearby Conveniences
The lobby has Banyan Breeze Coffee, handy for a morning coffee or drink. With kids, being able to grab coffee without heading out is surprisingly practical.

Central Waikiki’s shops are close for meals, shopping and cafés, and International Market Place and the main streets are within reach for an evening stroll. If your child is tired, head back; if you want to go out again, it’s easy.
Hawaii plans shift with weather and energy, and having options nearby helps. The Aston Waikiki Banyan offered easy access to sights, food, shopping and the beach.
Pros of the Aston Waikiki Banyan
The biggest advantage is location: close to Waikiki Beach and major sights, easy for beach trips and combining the zoo and aquarium.

Second, the full kitchen. Given Hawaii food prices, breakfast and snacks in the room are a very practical benefit, almost essential for families with kids.
Third, space. The one-bedroom layout with separate living room is more livable than a hotel room, great for long stays and families.
Fourth, value for practicality. Waikiki isn’t cheap, but considering location, space and a kitchen, it’s a reasonable choice.
Which Families It Suits
It suits families who value practicality: those wanting a stay near Waikiki Beach, a condo hotel with a full kitchen, a roomy unit with kids or lower food costs.

It may not suit honeymooners seeking a romantic luxury resort or anyone who prioritizes brand-new rooms and flawless facilities. It’s a realistic stay for living like a family, not a mood-driven luxury hotel.
Final Verdict: A Realistic Base Camp for Waikiki Families
In short, the Aston Waikiki Banyan is a practical condo stay for Waikiki family trips. It isn’t glamorous, but the roomy layout, full kitchen and proximity to Waikiki Beach are clear strengths.

In Hawaii, how comfortably you rest shapes each day: back from the beach for a quick shower, a snack in the room when your child is hungry and an easy evening walk along Waikiki. If that matters to you, the Aston Waikiki Banyan deserves a spot on your list.

If practicality beats luxury, routes beat mood and a big room with a kitchen beats a pretty lobby, this is a realistic choice in Waikiki. Save it and compare it with other Waikiki hotels as you plan.
