The Goesan Red Pepper Festival is one of Chungcheongbuk-do’s best-known farm festivals, held at Goesan Organic Expo Plaza and along Dongjincheon Stream. As of the 2026 edition, it ran September 3–6 under the theme “Goesan, the Standard of Spicy.” Entry is free, some programs cost a small fee, and the core hours are 10 a.m.–8 p.m. It’s more than chili shopping: there are plenty of hands-on activities for kids, and even the closing day keeps the signature programs running into a fireworks finale.
When to Arrive
Aim for around 10:30–11 a.m. On the 2026 closing day the schedule ran: pepper drumming show at 11 a.m., the Golden Pepper hunt at 1 p.m., pepper fish catching in Dongjincheon from 2:30–3:30 p.m., the spicy food contest at 3 p.m., the Goegang song contest and closing ceremony from 7 p.m., and roughly ten minutes of fireworks around 9 p.m. A natural day: morning activities, lunch, Golden Pepper hunt, fish catching, contest, farmers’ market, dinner, concert, fireworks. Popular activities can fill up, so start early if there’s one your kids really want.
Pepper Drumming (Gochu Nanta)

At the Goesan Red Pepper Festival, the pepper drumming session is an easy first activity. Kids join in instead of just watching. Shows alone rarely hold a child’s attention for long; one activity where they move makes them feel part of the festival.
Find the Golden Pepper

The Golden Pepper hunt is one of the festival’s signature programs. Turning a chili festival into a treasure hunt changes everything for kids. What children remember most from festivals around the world is rarely a stage show; it’s the moment they searched, ran and solved a mission.
Pepper Fish Catching in the Stream

For many families this is the highlight of the Goesan Red Pepper Festival: catching freshwater fish by hand in Dongjincheon Stream, with on-site registration. Kids will get wet, so pack towels, spare clothes and socks, plus a hat on sunny days. Check registration well before the start time.
Free Safety Experience Zone

A traveling safety zone runs alongside the festival, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. at the Expo Plaza and gateball area: fire-evacuation maze, crosswalk practice, an airplane simulator and other disaster scenarios, plus CPR, water extinguishers and firefighter gear. It’s free with on-site registration. On weekends the fire-safety booth closed at 3 p.m. in 2026, so do it in the morning.
The Spicy Food Contest

The spicy food contest at the Goesan Red Pepper Festival best captures the theme. Treat it as a show, not a challenge for kids. Mixing in a few watch-only moments between activities saves everyone’s energy.
Buying Goesan Clean Chili Peppers

For parents, the market is half the reason to visit the Goesan Red Pepper Festival. Official 2026 prices for 600 g (one geun) were 16,000 won for washed dried peppers and 18,000 won for washed, de-stemmed peppers, 1,000 won lower than the year before. An on-site mill grinds your peppers, staff help carry purchases to your car, and free nationwide delivery was offered.
Evening Concert and Closing Ceremony

On the closing night, the Goegang song contest features town-versus-town singing with guest performers, followed by the closing ceremony.
Fireworks Finale

Around 9 p.m., fireworks light up the Expo Plaza for about ten minutes. Staying that late after a full day is hard for kids, so plan a long café or meal break in the afternoon. Pick two or three activities rather than trying everything.
Parking and Shuttle
In 2026 a free shuttle ran from the temporary lot at 35-2 Daesa-ri, Goesan-eup, to Gate 2 of the sports complex, and several nearby roads were closed. Save the temporary lot in your navigation instead of driving to the gate.
Pair It with Chungbuk Aquarium
If you want one more stop, Chungbuk Freshwater Aquarium pairs well, but not on a day you plan to stay for fireworks. Choose either a short morning aquarium visit and an afternoon at the festival, or a full festival day.
Staying Overnight: Sanmagi Old Trail

With a night in Goesan, walk the Sanmagi Old Trail along Goesan Lake the next day, a calm contrast to the festival crowds. With kids, walk a scenic section rather than the full trail.
Suggested Family Itinerary
Arrive at 10:30, check the safety zone, join the 11 a.m. pepper drumming, eat lunch, do the Golden Pepper hunt at 1 p.m., register for fish catching around 2 p.m., catch fish at 2:30, glance at the spicy contest, browse the market and world chili exhibition, rest, then catch the 7 p.m. concert and the 9 p.m. fireworks. The closing day of the Goesan Red Pepper Festival isn’t a leftover day; it’s one of the best days to go.
