Goseong Dumbeong Eco Experience: A Farm Pond Nature Class for Kids in Gyeongnam

Goseong Dumbeong eco experience: Madongho Goseong Dumbeong Experience Center

If you thought Goseong was only about the sea, think again.

The Goseong Dumbeong eco experience was a living nature class for our kids and a quiet late-autumn escape for us parents.

Farm pond in late autumn

We visited the Madongho Goseong Dumbeong Experience Center in Maam-myeon, Goseong.

The program lasted about two hours and blended Goseong’s late-autumn scenery with ecology lessons.

What Is a Dumbeong? The Little Pond Holding Nature’s Secrets

Have you heard the word dumbeong? It’s a small man-made pond dug beside rice paddies or fields to store water for farming. Once common but rare these days, these ponds save crops in droughts and shelter countless aquatic creatures, acting as an ecosystem hub.

We joined the Goseong Dumbeong eco experience at Madongho, where a well-kept pond ecosystem gives kids a hands-on nature lesson.

The “Dumbeong Hide-and-Seek” program ran from 10 a.m. to noon, about two hours.

Even in the chilly November air, the pond was full of life.

1. A Tiny World Under the Digital Microscope

We started with a fascinating digital microscope session, magnifying insects we had just collected.

Magnified insect

Dragonflies and grasshoppers that looked like specks appeared huge on screen, and the kids gasped as the guide explained each body part. Discovering so much life in one small pond was amazing, and a great science lesson.

2. Catching Creatures With Fish Traps

Next came the trap experience that sparked the kids’ curiosity. Using the traps elders once used to catch fish in ponds, we collected creatures from the dumbeong.

Clumsy at first, the kids soon got the hang of it and cheered as they found loaches and crucian carp.

We placed the creatures in an observation tank for a closer look, then released them back into the pond, learning how precious life is.

3. Insect Hunting and Ecology Lessons

Walking the paddies
Searching the grass

We walked the paddies and grass around the pond looking for late-autumn insects, observed bugs resting by the harvested fields, and learned how important a dumbeong is in beating droughts, for farmers and countless living things alike.

We also released the insects and made grasshopper crafts.

4. The Joy of Harvest: Threshing and Milling New Rice

The most special part of this Goseong Dumbeong eco experience was threshing and milling new rice. We brought rice harvested beside the pond and used traditional tools to separate the grains from the stalks.

The kids loved threshing with their little hands. Then we milled the rice

and saw it become the white rice we eat every day. It was a precious chance to understand farmers’ hard work and the value of every grain.

5. Goseong’s Gift: Blue Eggs and Sikhye

Snack time

After all that work, snack time felt extra special: rare blue-shelled eggs and cool, sweet sikhye rice punch. We refueled on healthy food and rested in Goseong’s late-autumn nature.

The Goseong Dumbeong eco experience isn’t just play.

It’s an educational program that sharpens children’s senses, curiosity and observation.

* Seeing living nature up close

* Touching it

* Comparing

* And returning it to nature

Kids naturally grasp ecological principles they can’t learn from books.

It was a real nature class that’s hard to find in the city,

and I highly recommend it as an autumn family trip.
