Hawaii Rental Car Review: Budget at Honolulu Airport, a Free Upgrade and a Pickup Checklist

Hawaii rental car from Budget at Honolulu airport

On our Hawaii family trip, we booked a car in advance on Budget’s Korean website, picked it up at the Honolulu International Airport branch and kept it for the whole six days.

If you only stay around Waikiki you can manage without a car, but with a child, beaches, supermarkets, malls and the far side of Oahu on the plan, a Hawaii rental car makes life much easier.

Best of all, when the staff saw how much luggage we had, they upgraded us to a bigger vehicle at no extra cost. We had several large suitcases and were worried about trunk space, so getting a G-Class started the trip on a high note.

Booking a Hawaii Rental Car on Budget’s Website

We made the reservation on Budget’s official Korean website.

We chose Honolulu International Airport (HNL) for both pickup and return, collecting the car at 1 p.m. on May 29, 2026 and returning it at noon on June 3, a five-night, six-day rental.

The Korean-language screens show dates, times, car class and payment terms clearly, so even first-time overseas renters can book without trouble.

Our original booking was an Intermediate (Group C) car, listed as a Toyota Corolla or similar: five seats, automatic, room for three large bags.

That looked fine for two adults and one child, but at the airport our suitcases turned out to be huge. Between beach gear and camera equipment, luggage on a Hawaii trip grows fast.

A Free Upgrade at the Airport

When we picked up the car, the staff checked our suitcases. The Intermediate car looked like a tight fit, so they offered us a larger vehicle.

Upgraded vehicle in the lot

The car we were given was a Mercedes G-Class. No upgrade fee was asked, and the switch came with no extra payment, which impressed us most.

Loading suitcases into the trunk

The big suitcases and bags fit easily, and there was plenty of room for our child to get in and out. The original sedan would have worked for three, but with shopping bags and beach gear piling up all week, the bigger car was a real gift.

Free upgrades depend on the branch’s stock that day, so they’re not guaranteed with every booking. We were lucky that our luggage and the lot’s inventory lined up. Still, the staff’s flexible service left a great impression.

Check the Car Before You Drive Off

Inspecting the car exterior

We didn’t leave right away. We checked the exterior and basic condition first.

We filmed the whole car on a phone and checked existing scratches, tires, dashboard warning lights and fuel level. The first car we were assigned actually had a problem with the registration sticker on the plate, so we swapped it for another.

Even with a proper booking on the official site, you still need to inspect the car on the spot. Look beyond scratches to the plate, registration sticker, dashboard and fuel. It’s a small hassle compared with trouble mid-trip.

Why Renting for the Whole Trip Worked

We used our Hawaii rental car almost every day.

With kids, departures slip, naps happen in transit, and hunger strikes suddenly. With a car, we never had to match a timetable and could reshape the day around everyone’s energy.

Beach gear in the trunk

Beach days mean towels, swim gear, spare clothes, water and snacks. Keeping it all in the car meant we didn’t need to keep going back to the hotel.

We could stop at a scenic spot on a whim, or head straight back when our child got tired. The biggest advantage of a Hawaii rental car isn’t seeing more sights; it’s traveling at your own family’s pace.

Handy for Supermarket and Shopping Runs

In Hawaii we had plenty to buy: water, drinks, fruit, kids’ snacks and gifts to bring home.

Groceries loaded in the car

With a car, heavy items and shopping bags went straight into the trunk before the next stop. On the nights we stayed somewhere with a kitchen, we could buy groceries in one trip.

After the G-Class upgrade, suitcases, shopping and beach gear all fit at once, and we appreciated that airport upgrade more as the trip went on.

When parking at sights or beaches, we kept shopping bags and valuables out of view. Passports, wallets and cameras always stayed with us.

Budget for Hotel Parking

As convenient as the car was, Waikiki hotel parking was a real cost.

For a full-trip rental, add insurance, fuel and hotel parking on top of the rental fee. If you’re staying only in Waikiki, renting just for the days you need may be cheaper.

Driving along the Oahu coast

We had lots of outer-island beaches, shopping and grocery runs, plus a child and luggage to move, so a full-trip rental suited us. Even with parking fees, it beat calling an Uber and hauling bags every time.

Prepay vs Pay Later

Budget’s Korean website lets you compare prepaid and pay-later rates for the same car.

For the same Intermediate car, pay later showed $280.99 and prepay $252.89, about $28.10 cheaper.

Prepay and pay-later rate comparison

If your dates are fixed and unlikely to change, prepaying is worth comparing. But prepaid bookings may have refund conditions for cancellation, no-shows and early returns, so read the terms, not just the price.

Rates and discounts vary with booking time, inventory and promotions, so go by the amount shown on the actual payment screen.

Our Verdict on Budget at Honolulu Airport

What we liked most over six days was the freedom.

We drove straight from the airport to our hotel, adjusted routes to our child’s mood and the weather, and on return day loaded everything and drove straight back to the same airport branch.

The free G-Class upgrade after staff saw our luggage was the highlight. Big suitcases and growing shopping hauls all fit comfortably for the whole six days.

Family road trip on Oahu

If we explore Oahu widely with our child again, we’ll rent a car. If your Hawaii family trip mixes beaches, supermarkets, shopping and outer-island drives, compare cars and payment terms for a Hawaii rental car on Budget’s website.
