Hwadam Botanic Garden with Kids: Reservations, Monorail Fares and Autumn Foliage Tips

Hwadam Botanic Garden: Basics and Autumn Reservations

Autumn foliage along the paths at Hwadam Botanic Garden

If you want a real autumn forest walk near Seoul, Hwadam Botanic Garden in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, belongs on your list. It is not only about maples: moss gardens, birch forest and pine gardens make it a lovely, slow walk with kids. Here is what to know about reservations, fares, the monorail and parking.

Entrance area of Hwadam Botanic Garden

The garden covers about 165,000 m² in Docheok-myeon, opened in 2013 and displays some 4,000 native and introduced plant species. As of October 1, 2026, hours are 09:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00), closed Mondays, though hours can change by season.

Reservations Are Everything in Autumn

In 2026, the autumn peak season ran October 23 – November 15, and peak-season tickets opened on September 16 at 1 p.m. Foliage timing varies each year, so check the garden’s notices before you go rather than counting on a “peak” date.

Admission and Monorail Fares

Hwadam Botanic Garden monorail through autumn trees
  • Adults: 11,000 won
  • Seniors and teens: 9,000 won
  • Children: 7,000 won
  • Under 24 months: free

The monorail is a separate ticket, and some discounts are suspended in October and November. It is a 1,213 m loop from the moss garden entrance toward the summit and down to the bonsai garden. From Station 1:

  • To Station 2 (about 5 min): 5,000 won adults, 4,000 won children
  • To Station 3 (about 10 min): 7,000 won adults, 6,000 won children
  • Full loop (about 20 min): 9,000 won adults, 7,000 won children

Station 1 tickets can be booked online; on site only leftover or canceled seats are sold, and Station 2 and 3 tickets are bought at those kiosks.

Which Section with Kids?

With kids who can walk, ride part of the way up and walk down through the forest. The Station 1→2 section is about 1.9 km and 40 minutes on foot, so with little ones, ride that part and walk the gentle downhill. A full loop is easy but you miss the forest interior.

Gardens Not to Miss

Moss garden at Hwadam Botanic Garden

Themed areas include the Nature Ecology Hall, moss garden, azalea path, plum garden, birch forest, fern garden, pine garden, bonsai garden and hydrangea garden. Choose a few seasonal ones and take your time. The moss garden changes the mood early on and is great for looking at tiny plants up close.

White birch forest trail in autumn

The birch forest, with white bark lining the path, is one of the garden’s signature walks. The pine and bonsai gardens are about tree forms rather than flowers; ask older kids how care and shaping change the same tree. In autumn, the real star is the foliage along the monorail and walking paths.

Walking with Kids Is Easier Than You Think

Gentle wooden deck path suitable for strollers

Seeing every themed garden takes about two hours for adults; allow two and a half with kids. Gentle deck paths mean you can tour Hwadam Botanic Garden with a stroller or wheelchair without the monorail. The Nature Ecology Hall shows native freshwater fish and insects, adding a learning angle. Wear comfortable sneakers.

Parking and Getting In

Search for Hwadam Botanic Garden or Konjiam Resort (278-1 Docheogwit-ro, Docheok-myeon, Gwangju). Park at the resort, then take the lift or, if the line is long, the “Follow the Flowers and Streams” walking path. In peak season, leave buffer time before any monorail booking.

Useful Rules

Visitors walking among autumn colors at the garden

Food other than drinks and light snacks is not allowed, nor are mats, tents, tripods, drones, kick scooters or pets. Plan meals before or after your visit. And remember, autumn here is about walking the forest; missing a monorail booking is no reason to cancel.

Who Will Love Hwadam Botanic Garden

Family enjoying autumn foliage at Hwadam

It suits families who want nature and seasonal change rather than rides. With elementary kids, the ecology hall, moss garden and birch forest turn a foliage trip into a learning walk. Book your ticket first, then choose a monorail section. Allow about two hours, or two and a half with rest stops.

Maple leaves glowing on the forest path

There are no thrill rides, but for a day spent truly walking through an autumn forest, Hwadam Botanic Garden is worth the trip.
