Otaru Sushi Guide: Why We Skipped Waraku and Found Toppi — No Wait, Better Value

The queue at Waraku stretched out of sight. We turned around — and found something better.

The Waraku Problem

Waraku is Otaru’s most famous conveyor belt sushi restaurant — a converted stone warehouse, beloved by Korean travelers, featured in every guide. We arrived excited. The line had other plans.

Already a long wait, with word that they might close early due to sold-out ingredients. Traveling with a young child, a long wait isn’t just inconvenient — it risks the whole afternoon. We walked away.

Enter Toppi: The Local’s Choice

A quick search led us to Kaiten Sushi Toppi (回転寿し とっぴ~), Otaru Canal Street branch — just a short walk from Waraku. Their local reputation: “fresher, cheaper, no performance.” Families eating comfortably inside the moment we arrived. Instant relief.

The Food: Hokkaido Seafood at Its Honest Best

🦔 Uni (Sea Urchin) Zero bitterness — pure, nutty sweetness from the first bite. My child, trying uni for the first time, looked up and said “It’s sweet!” Eyes wide. Plate cleared.

🐟 Salmon — Aburi Style Lightly torched salmon with a gentle smokiness and buttery texture. The kind of piece that makes you forget you were ever tired from traveling.

🦀 Crab Gunkan Crab meat piled so generously it’s genuinely difficult to fit in one bite. Abundant, fresh, and completely honest about what Hokkaido seafood should be.

Family-Friendly in Every Way

Wide table seating means you can sit across from your child comfortably — no cramped counter anxiety. Kids’ menu and dessert options are fully available. And the tablet ordering system means zero Japanese required — our child loved tapping the screen to order.

Travel rarely goes exactly to plan — and sometimes that’s the best thing that can happen. Missing Waraku led us directly to Toppi, and the meal became one of our favorite memories from the entire Hokkaido trip.

Fresh ingredients, a child happily eating, no waiting in the cold — that’s the real Otaru sushi experience.

If Waraku’s line defeats you, don’t despair. Toppi is right around the corner — and it might just be the better meal.
