Tomamu Ski Resort With Kids: English Ski Lessons, Powder Runs and Easy Rentals

Tomamu ski resort in winter

We spent a winter in Hokkaido, where the whole world quietly turns white. The word “snow” alone is exciting here, and each of us enjoyed the season in our own way.

This trip was extra special.

Family on the slopes

Our child, just starting to ski, came along with a cousin who’s already an expert. I wondered whether any resort could satisfy both a beginner and an advanced skier, and the Tomamu ski resort at Hoshino Resorts was the answer.

Tomamu The Tower

Here’s the full story: an unforgettable English ski lesson with an Australian instructor for our child and thrilling powder runs for the cousin.

1. Why Tomamu Ski Resort Is the Heart of Hokkaido’s Powder Belt

I’ve visited many winter destinations as a travel creator, but Tomamu moved me on another level. It sits in the heart of inland Hokkaido’s powder belt, where temperatures down to minus 35°C create superb snow.

The dry, light “champagne powder” doesn’t hurt when you fall and keeps clothes from getting soaked, perfect for kids learning to ski. The scale is huge, with 29 runs and a longest run of 4,200 m.

Runs range from the beginner Sunshine course to the expert-only No Gravity, so family members of every level are happy.

2. A Kids English Ski Lesson With an Australian Instructor

Our main goal was to show our child how fun skiing is. Since Japanese was a barrier, we booked an English-language lesson with an international instructor in advance, and it was a stroke of genius.

Meeting in front of The Tower

The meeting point was right in front of Tomamu The Tower. No hauling heavy gear far; we stepped out of the lobby and met the instructor right away.

Instructor Celine

Our instructor, Celine, came from Australia. With a bright smile, she knelt to our child’s eye level to say hello.

A natural English environment: the two-hour lesson was entirely in English. Simple phrases like “Make a pizza slice!” and “Look at me!” let even a child with little English follow along. It felt like a bonus English class on top of skiing.

High five on the slope

Trapped in praise: every small success earned an “Excellent!” and a high five, and our cautious child soon started enjoying the snow. Celine’s bright energy and constant encouragement built visible confidence in just two hours.

Riding the lift
Skiing down together

One hour covered posture and basics, and the second hour was riding the lift and skiing down, which our child loved.

After the lesson, our child shouted, “Mom, I want to ski with Celine again!” Taking away the fear of skiing was more than enough.

If you’re considering lessons for your child, book an English lesson with an international instructor in advance. It makes for an unforgettable memory.

Tip: booking lessons and lift tickets online in advance is easier and sometimes cheaper.

3. Conquering Powder via the Unkai Gondola

While our child learned the basics, our cousin rode the gondola up the mountain. The Tomamu ski resort is heaven for advanced skiers too.

Unkai Gondola

Unkai Gondola: from the Resort Center, it whisks you up near the 1,088 m summit. Expert runs: our cousin mostly skied The Glory and No Gravity from the top, steep natural terrain with knee-deep powder that was thrilling beyond words.

Tip: non-skiers can ride the gondola too and enjoy the Unkai Terrace and KUMO Cafe, so don’t miss it.

4. A Rental System That Frees You From Heavy Gear

The hardest part of a ski trip with kids is lugging gear. At the Tomamu ski resort, we didn’t have to worry.

Rental shop

High-end gear: rentals include the latest brands like Atomic. Flexible returns: rent and return anywhere on the resort, including The Tower, Risonare and the Resort Center, so you can rent at The Tower and return at the Resort Center before catching the shuttle. Hygienic service: hats and gloves that touch your skin are new and yours to keep, so no damp used gloves.

5. Winter Activities Beyond the Slopes

Winter activities at Tomamu

Even off the slopes, there’s no time to be bored at the Tomamu ski resort. There was almost too much to do.

Ice Village

At night, a village made of ice comes to life in the resort’s forest.

In the 2025–2026 season it ran from December 10 to March 14, with a natural ice rink, ice slides the kids rode again and again, and an ice bar serving drinks in ice glasses. Admission (600 yen) was free for hotel guests, so we strolled there every night.

GAO Outdoor Center

For a more dynamic way to enjoy the snowfields, try the GAO Outdoor Center.

Snow rafting and banana boats pulled by snowmobiles had the whole family screaming with joy. Snow karts race down a 4,200 m course, an experience unique to Tomamu. Family activities like curling from age 3 and baumkuchen making are on offer, and snowmobile courses of 3–8 km let you drive or ride behind a guide.

Our days at Hoshino Resorts Tomamu felt less like a trip and more like a gift to our family.

Thanks to Celine, our child learned the joy of communicating in English and the satisfaction of skiing, while our cousin savored true Hokkaido powder. A system that lets everyone ski at their own level, together or apart, made the whole family happy.

Planning a winter trip with kids or family members of different skill levels?

I wholeheartedly recommend the Tomamu ski resort for unforgettable memories in a snowy wonderland.
