This post introduces an Otaru day trip,

one of the most romantic and atmospheric escapes near Sapporo.
Just 40 minutes by train, the port city of Otaru has beautiful

canals, desserts and a classic atmosphere that capture the essence of travel in Japan.
1. Otaru Day Trip Route Tips

The key to an Otaru day trip is planning your route.
The most efficient way is the JR Rapid Airport train from Sapporo Station. It takes about 40 minutes and runs frequently.
Route tips
* Start: get off at Minami-Otaru Station and begin sightseeing
* Finish: head back to Sapporo from Otaru Station
This route is mostly downhill, so it’s easy to walk even with kids.
2. Marchen Crossing: Where Otaru’s Charm Begins

Marchen Crossing is where Otaru makes its first impression.
Lined with old Western-style buildings, it feels like stepping into a European alley.
Photo spot: the steam clock
Made in Vancouver, it puffs steam and plays a melody every 15 minutes,
making it Otaru’s landmark and best photo spot.
Visit at dusk when the gas lamps come on, and Otaru’s romance is complete.
3. Otaru Music Box Museum Main Hall: A Dreamy Street of Music

Across from Marchen Crossing, the Otaru Music Box Museum is Japan’s largest music box shop.

It uses a 1912 brick building as is, so the interior feels like a movie set.
Thousands of music boxes are on display,
from anime theme songs to Otaru-only carousel music boxes.

If you have time, you can try making a music box, but on a day trip, souvenir shopping is plenty of fun.
4. LeTAO Main Store: Otaru’s Dessert Heaven

Otaru’s other must is LeTAO.

This is the main store of the Double Fromage cheesecake, a symbol of Hokkaido desserts.

The first floor sells gift desserts like cookies, chocolate and cake,

and the second-floor cafe has window seats overlooking Marchen Crossing for a relaxing dessert.

Besides LeTAO, Rokkatei, Kitakaro and other famous dessert brands
are gathered on one street, perfect for a dessert tour on your Otaru day trip.

5. Sakaimachi Street: A Road of Glass and Fragrance

This street runs about 1 km from Minami-Otaru Station to Otaru Canal,
where Otaru’s history and artistic spirit meet.

It’s lined with glass craft shops and Kitaichi Glass studios,

and 19th-century brick and stone warehouses make you want to take photos the whole way.
On sunny afternoons, light reflects off the glassware for a magical atmosphere.
6. Otaru Canal: The Romantic Highlight and a Must for Night Views

It’s the symbol of Otaru and the perfect end to your trip.

Once a logistics hub, the canal is loved as a night-view spot.

Best time: around 5 to 6 p.m., from sunset as the lights come on
Walk along the canal and the gas lamps reflected on the water sparkle like a painting.

If you have time, take the 40-minute Otaru Canal cruise.
The guide’s commentary on the history gives you a fresh view of the canal.
7. Kitaichi Hall No. 3: Rest Under Kerosene Lamps
My last recommendation is Kitaichi Hall in Building No. 3.
It’s a glass craft cafe lit only by 167 kerosene lamps.
Sipping coffee in the soft light without electricity
is the most relaxed way to savor Otaru’s atmosphere.
The staff light each lamp one by one at about 8:45 every morning, a popular sight in itself.
Otaru Day Trip Summary

To sum up the key points:

This is the most efficient route.

Photo spots: Marchen Crossing’s steam clock and Otaru Canal at night
