Jinju Heritage Night Tour with Kids: Secret Inspector Missions and Night Kayaking

Jinju Heritage Night Tour at Jinjuseong Fortress

The Jinju Heritage Night Tour lights up Jinjuseong Fortress and the old downtown Rodeo Street in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do. As of the 2026 edition it ran four nights, September 3–6, 6–10 p.m. It isn’t just illuminated heritage: kids follow a secret royal inspector (amhaeng-eosa) story, solve missions, kayak on the Namgang River and walk a fortress transformed by light. Heritage media art ran at the fortress at the same time, so one visit covered two night events.

Festival Basics

Entry to the Jinju Heritage Night Tour is free; a few activities are paid or need booking. The 2026 theme was “The Secret Inspector Appears at Jinjuseong at Night,” framing the fortress as a night-time history game. The Heritage Media Art Jinjuseong program ran August 14–September 6, 7:30–10:30 p.m., with 12 programs including façade projections on the north and south gates and interactive content at Chokseongnu Pavilion.

Start with the Secret Letter Mission

The first activity for kids is “The Inspector’s Secret Letter,” a stamp tour with five missions between Gyeongjeolsa Shrine and Jinju National Museum. Walking the fortress becomes finding the next clue. In 2026 there was also a kids’ reporter program where children photographed the festival and wrote their own article.

Night Kayaking on the Namgang

Night kayaking with lanterns on the Namgang River

The most memorable program at the Jinju Heritage Night Tour is probably kayaking below the fortress’s south gate, with a floating-lantern ritual. Kids 5 and up can ride, two per kayak, minors with a guardian. Check reservations early; looking up at the illuminated fortress from the river is a scene few history festivals offer.

Don’t Skip Jinju National Museum

Jinju National Museum night activities

The museum stays open late during the festival. In 2026 it offered three inspector-themed activities, including a multi-stamp postcard and a mapae (inspector’s badge) craft, plus a 7 p.m. LED-prop giveaway for the first 300 visitors.

Photos in the Silk Lantern Tunnel

Jinju is famous for silk, and a tunnel of silk lanterns lined the slope up to Yeongnam Pojeongsa. It’s the best spot for family photos. Lantern art, calligraphy and light pillars filled the rest of the fortress.

Gate-Closing and Guard Ceremony

Guard-changing ceremony at Gongbukmun gate

On Friday and Saturday evenings (7–7:30 p.m. in 2026), a gate-closing and guard-changing ceremony was reenacted at Gongbukmun Gate. At 30 minutes, it’s easy to watch with kids.

A Theatrical Walking Tour

Besides guided tours, there’s a performance-style walk where actors and characters tell stories around the fortress, up to 50 people per session, with advance booking preferred.

Dinner on Rodeo Street

Rodeo Street night market food zone

Only seeing the fortress is half of the Jinju Heritage Night Tour. The Rodeo night market food zone ran 6–10 p.m. every night with local craft beer. On Saturday in 2026, Nongae Market held a night market and a children’s bazaar ran nearby, making Saturday the fullest day.

Parking

For the Jinju Heritage Night Tour, set your navigation to Gongbukmun Gate or Jungang Market as the official site suggests, then use the temporary lots (the Nabulcheon covered road, Insa-dong lot, education office and others) rather than circling near the fortress.

Before the Festival: Pterosaur Footprint Museum

Jinju Pterosaur Footprint Fossil Museum

Arriving early? Jinju Pterosaur Footprint Fossil Museum shows real footprint fossils. In 2026 it opened 9 a.m.–6 p.m., closed Mondays, with tickets of 2,000/1,000/500 won. Pterosaurs by day, Joseon fortress by night. Younger kids may prefer Jinyangho Park and Zoo, open 9 a.m.–6 p.m. (closed Tuesdays).

Jinju Battle History Park

Jinju Battle History Park, opened in 2024 to commemorate the Siege of Jinju, sits right beside the fortress and is easy to add.

Suggested Plan

Arrive around 2–3 p.m. and choose either the pterosaur museum or the zoo. Eat an early dinner near the fortress around 5, start the stamp tour at 6, head to the museum for the 7 p.m. event, watch media art from 7:30, add a kayak or theater tour if booked, and finish at the Rodeo night market. The Jinju Heritage Night Tour lets kids complete missions, ride, search and explore rather than just look at heritage.
