Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival : Dates, Fireworks, Parking and Tips for Kids

Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival 2026 Overview

Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival: Floating lanterns on the Namgang River below Jinjuseong Fortress

If you are planning an autumn trip to Jinju, the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival is the event to plan around. Lanterns glow on the Namgang River and the light displays continue into Jinjuseong Fortress, so it is as much about Jinju’s history as its night views. The 2026 edition added kids’ activities, a drone light show and fireworks.

Lantern displays lit up along the riverbank

The 2026 festival runs from Saturday, October 3 to Sunday, October 18, around Jinjuseong Fortress and the Namgang River. Lanterns are lit daily 18:00–24:00, and the floating bridges and booths run 13:00–23:00. With kids, arrive around 4–5 p.m., see the fortress in daylight, eat, then catch the 6 p.m. lighting. Allow at least three hours.

Why Lanterns in Jinju?

The tradition dates back to the 1592 Battle of Jinju during the Japanese invasions. Defenders floated lanterns on the Namgang to watch for enemy troops crossing the river and to send word to families outside the walls. Later, lanterns were floated to honor those who died. Explaining this turns “pretty lights” into a real story for kids. Displays spread across the fortress, the river, the Jinju Victory History Park and the Sinan riverside.

Lantern Zones to See

Giant themed lanterns on the river stage

Around the floating stage you will find a large display celebrating Korea’s global festivals, a “wedding of the century” zone on love and harmony, and a zone near Jinju Bridge on the city’s history and spirit. Inside the fortress, a “Welcome to Joseon” lawn mixes traditional and modern characters, and Chokseongnu Pavilion features lanterns on Joseon-era performers. With kids, focus on the fortress, the history park, a floating bridge and the river lanterns rather than every zone.

Hands-On Activities for Kids

Children floating handmade lanterns on the river

The classic is making and floating your own lantern at the Manggyeong-dong riverside (October 3–18, floating from 6 p.m., 5,000 won). Hanging a wish lantern costs 10,000 won. The floating “Love Bridge” is 2,000 won one way or 6,000 won for a day pass. The history park offers free AI-reactive lanterns and an AI K-pop dance zone, and older kids will love the Jinjuseong history mission tour, an outdoor escape-room game based on the battle (5,000 won).

Parking at the Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival

The official site points to festival lots in front of Wings Tower in the Innovation City, Mulchoul Park and Jinju Sports Complex. On weekends and fireworks nights, do not count on parking next to the fortress; use the official lots and check the site’s traffic notice on the day, as temporary lots and road closures change.

An Easy Family Route

A good first-time route: Jinjuseong Fortress → Chokseongnu → Jinju Victory History Park → floating bridge → river lanterns → Manggyeong-dong riverside. The official recommended course links the fortress, Jinju National Museum, Chokseongnu and the history park the same way.

Families walking along the lantern-lit river path

With kids, two to three hours of the core zones after the 6 p.m. lighting is plenty. Prioritize the bridge, the lantern activity and displays they will love, such as characters and space themes.

Visiting on a Quiet Night

Not every night has fireworks. On October 4, the day after the opening parade and fireworks, there were no big events, which made it easier to enjoy the lanterns themselves.

Jinjuseong walls and lanterns at blue hour

For photos, aim for blue hour, just after sunset, when the fortress lights and lanterns are on but the sky still has color. Shoot from across the river to frame the fortress and the floating lanterns together. If the bridge queue is long, the riverside paths on both banks give great views anyway.

Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival nights without special events can be the most relaxed for families: arrive at 4–5 p.m., see the fortress, eat, enjoy the lanterns, try one activity and walk the riverside. For fireworks, choose October 3, 9 or 17; for fireworks plus drones, October 17.
