Suwon Kkochi Festa : Korea’s New Skewer Food Festival Next to Hwaseong Fortress

Suwon Kkochi Festa 2026: The Basics

Looking for a weekend outing in Suwon with kids? The Suwon Kkochi Festa is a brand-new food festival built around skewers (kkochi), and it is more than a food market: you can pair it with hands-on activities, stage shows and the Hwaseong Fortress area. As of October 4 it is in full swing and runs through October 5.

  • Dates: October 3–5, 2026, 11:00–20:00
  • Venue: the plaza in front of Suwon Hwaseong Museum
  • Admission: free; food and some activities are paid individually

Under the theme “Suwon is Skewers!”, about 90 local restaurants, food-street merchant groups and organizations take part, serving everything from traditional Korean skewers to dishes from around the world. There are skewer and food-truck zones, a Suwon traditional liquor zone, a flea market, brand pop-ups, a camping-style lounge, a citizen activity zone and a stage.

Why the Suwon Kkochi Festa Is Worth a Visit

The headline is Suwon’s own skewers. Hwayangjeok comes from the royal banquet food of King Jeongjo, and Suwon galbi skewers use the city’s famous marinated short ribs. Next to them you can compare skewers from Japan, China, India, Thailand and more; official materials list seven countries, and on-site reports count 104 menu items. Go as a group and share several plates.

With Kids, Check the Activity Zone First

Before you queue for food, check the citizen activity zone. The pre-registered programs (sotteok skewer making, fruit skewer styling, a “global chef” class and a skewer board game) have closed, so focus on walk-up options: rice-cake skewers, skewer bakery, face painting, sun-cap decorating and a hand-washing class. One hands-on activity keeps kids happy far longer than eating alone, but slots can be limited, so head to the booths first.

What Not to Miss

  • Suwon galbi skewers and hwayangjeok: the best link between local food and history, and an easy way to explain to kids why Suwon sells them.
  • The sister-city chefs’ zone: cooks from Suwon’s international sister cities show off their food cultures.
  • Food shows and stage performances: a good chance to sit and rest. Check the on-site board, as times can change.

Parking for the Suwon Kkochi Festa

This needs attention. The city festival portal lists no dedicated parking for the event. The museum normally has about 80 spaces, but the plaza and lot are used as festival space, and the museum itself recommends public transport.

Use nearby public lots such as Hwaseong Haenggung Parking: open 24 hours, 212 spaces, 900 won for the first 30 minutes, then 400 won per 10 minutes, or 14,000 won per day. Park once and walk between the festival and the fortress.

Pair It with Hwaseong Fortress

Suwon Hwaseong Museum is right next to the festival: 09:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00), adults 2,000 won, children 12 and under free, closed Mondays. Seeing how King Jeongjo built the fortress first makes the walk far more meaningful for kids.

Hwaseong Haenggung Palace opens 09:00–18:00, with night openings until 21:30 on Fridays to Sundays and holidays (adults 2,000 won, teens 1,500 won, children 1,000 won). Grab skewers for dinner, then walk over for the evening visit.

The 2026 Suwon Hwaseong Media Art runs until October 6 around Hwaseomun, Janganmun and Jangan Park. Shows at Hwaseomun run at 19:30, 20:30 and 21:30, and Jangan Park has interactive media art, lighting and a reactive playground.

Our Suggested Family Route

Families sharing skewers on the festival plaza
  • 14:00–15:00 Arrive and check walk-up activities
  • Do one activity, then share two or three skewer dishes
  • Visit the museum or Hwaseong Haenggung
  • After dark, walk to Janganmun or Hwaseomun for the media art

The festival alone takes about two hours; with the fortress, plan half a day or more.

Evening lights over the festival and fortress walls

As a first-year festival, the Suwon Kkochi Festa mixes local dishes like Suwon galbi and hwayangjeok, global skewers and kids’ activities, which makes it an easy family day trip. Our pick: Suwon Kkochi Festa, then Hwaseong Haenggung, then the media art, all within walking distance.

Dates, programs and prices in this guide are as of the 2026 edition. Check the official website for next year’s schedule before you go.
