Junpei Biei: How to Skip the Line and What to Order, Ebi-don or Curry

Junpei Biei: No-Wait Tips and Menu Picks

Junpei Biei exterior in snow

One of the most memorable moments of our Hokkaido trip was a meal in snowy Biei at Yoshoku to Cafe Junpei. I thought a tempura bowl couldn’t be that special, and one bite proved me wrong. We tried the signature ebi-don and a rich curry. Here’s how we avoided the notorious wait and our honest review.

Why Does Everyone Line Up at Junpei Biei?

Line outside the restaurant

In quiet Biei, you’ll notice one spot packed with people.

Nothing wastes travel time like waiting in line.

With kids, shivering outside in the cold for over an hour is unthinkable.

So why do travelers insist that Biei means Junpei?

Michelin pedigree: it was once featured in the Michelin Guide Hokkaido edition. An irreplaceable sauce: not just a tempura bowl, but a special sauce soaked into every grain of rice. Incredible shrimp: far plumper and firmer than ebi-don back home.

I wondered if it was worth the line too, but my conclusion: if you know the trick, absolutely go.

The 11 a.m. Trick: Getting In Without a Wait

Waiting list

The question everyone asks is when to go to avoid waiting.

With a child, I had to minimize the wait, and after reading many reviews I planned to arrive before 11 a.m.

Junpei usually opens at 11 a.m., but arriving right at 11 is a mistake; by then the front is packed and you’ll likely miss the first seating.

Here’s the plan.

1. Aim for 10:30–10:40 a.m.: arriving 20–30 minutes before opening secures the first seating. 2. Put your name down: go inside and add your name to the waiting list right away; it’s often possible even before opening. 3. After 11 a.m.: Biei tour buses start arriving and the wait balloons, often to an hour.

Seated at opening

We arrived around 10:40 and sat down with hot tea right at opening, while later arrivals were already in a long line. Those 20 minutes change the whole experience.

Parking tip: with a rental car you can use the lot next door, but know the nearby public lots in case it’s full.

Ebi-don or Curry: What to Order?

Once seated, the menu dilemma begins: ebi-don alone feels like a missed chance.

So we ordered both ebi-don (shrimp tempura bowl) and ebi fry curry (shrimp tempura curry).

Ebi-don

1. The clear winner: ebi-don

Junpei’s signature. The crispy batter soaks up the savory sauce without ever getting soggy.

Three shrimp (about 1,600 yen): right for light eaters or kids. Four shrimp (about 1,800 yen): for big appetites or tempura lovers, go for four; another jumbo shrimp for 200 yen is a bargain.

Ebi fry curry

2. The surprise hit: ebi fry curry

Price: about 1,800 yen. Taste: rich, deep Japanese curry roux. Dipping the shrimp tempura into the curry has its own charm, and if the ebi-don’s soy sauce feels sweet, the savory curry is a great alternative. Best combo: with two or more people, share a four-shrimp ebi-don and an ebi fry curry for the perfect sweet-salty balance.

Note: prices are from our 2025 visit and have been creeping up with inflation, so budget generously.

“No Cards!” Checklist Before You Go

Menu board

This is the most important part. Card payments are common in Japan, but Junpei Biei mostly takes cash only, and recent visitors report cash-only payment.

Check the following so you aren’t caught out at the register.

Summary notes:

Name: Yoshoku to Cafe Junpei. Hours: lunch 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (last order 2:30), dinner 5 to 7:30 p.m. (last order 7), closed Mondays. Payment: cash only; cards very likely not accepted. Prices: ebi-don with three shrimp 1,600 yen, with four 1,800 yen, ebi fry curry 1,800 yen, and menchi-katsu or chicken bowls around 1,300–1,500 yen.

Curry and ebi-don together

Junpei Biei isn’t just famous; its fundamentals are solid. I kept thinking about that firm shrimp long after we got home.

Sharing an ebi-don and a curry was a stroke of genius: our child loved the sweet-savory ebi-don while we enjoyed the rich curry.

In short: arrive by 10:40 a.m. for opening, order the four-shrimp ebi-don with a curry, and bring plenty of cash.

Remember these three things and lunch in Biei will be perfect.

I hope this helps you plan your Hokkaido trip.
