True to its name, “beautiful sea,” it lets you experience Okinawa’s blue marine ecosystem up close.

It isn’t just an aquarium but a marine theme park full of science, wonder and photo spots.

Seeing whale sharks, manta rays, coral and deep-sea creatures in one place is rare anywhere in the world.

1. A Must on Any Okinawa Trip: Why Visit Churaumi Aquarium

Aquarium exterior

Located on the Motobu Peninsula in northern Okinawa, Churaumi Aquarium is one of Japan’s most popular marine attractions.

Its main tank, the Kuroshio Sea, is one of the largest in the world and famous for successfully keeping multiple whale sharks and manta rays.

Travelers love it for more than its size.

The aquarium uses natural light to show Okinawa’s marine life in a truly living form.

It’s educational for kids and healing for adults.

Whale shark silhouette

The whale shark’s silhouette in front of the tank is overwhelming.

In the afternoon, sunlight streams through the glass for an even more mysterious mood.

The Coral Sea looks like a piece of Okinawa’s ocean moved indoors.

About 800 types of coral grow in natural light, with currents finely tuned to show the ecosystem as it is.
