Torikai Sohonke in Nagoya: Oyakodon at Lachic Department Store

Torikai Sohonke in Nagoya

Famous foods of Nagoya include Harbs cakes, miso katsu, miso nikomi udon, hitsumabushi, and Komeda. Another one is chicken dishes, chicken and egg cuisine. Actually, Yama-chan is famous for fried chicken wings, but we had spent 2 nights and 3 days just eating, so we were too full for wings. Tired and cold, we headed back, only confirming that Yama-chan was behind our Best Western hotel.

Next time, I will definitely try it!

Back at the hotel, we rested a bit. My nephew wanted a hot dog, and the Lawson sold them, so I bought him one. After resting a few hours, it was too cold, so I changed into warmer clothes and went back out.

It got dark quickly. As I mentioned, Japan is famous for chicken and egg dishes, and among them, oyakodon! You can taste chicken and egg together. Oyakodon means “parent and child”, which is brutal. Parent and child… the expression for chicken and egg rice is scary.

Oyakodon explanation

Torikai is located on the 7th floor of the Lachic department store. Lachic is a department store popular with young people, with a youthful vibe. On the 7th floor, you immediately see the Torikai sign.

We have arrived.

They sell fried chicken wings too.

Chicken rice bowl with cooked egg and raw egg on top: this Nagoya oyakodon was what I had always wanted to try after seeing it in Japanese anime!

This is the cheese oyakodon, without raw egg. The first taste reminded me of butter soy sauce egg rice back home. But the eggs were undercooked, so it got greasy as I kept eating, slightly fishy too, and I could not finish it in the end. Of what I ate in Nagoya, it suited my taste the least.

Prices, hours and details in this post are from our visit in July 2016 and may have changed, so check the latest information before you go.
