Sapporo Beer Museum: Free Self-Guided Visit vs Premium Tour, an Honest Comparison

Sapporo Beer Museum red brick building

If you’re planning a Sapporo trip, there’s one classic stop you should make: the Sapporo Beer Museum. Its striking red brick building preserves traces of Hokkaido’s pioneer era and tells the story of Japanese beer from its birth.

It’s more than a tasting room; it’s a window into Hokkaido’s history and industry. Here’s my honest comparison of the free visit and the premium tour, plus beers to try.

Sapporo Beer Museum Basic Information

The Sapporo Beer Museum is at 9-1-1 Kita-7-jo Higashi, Higashi-ku, Sapporo, inside Sapporo Garden Park.

It’s open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last entry 17:30), closed Mondays and over the New Year holidays; if Monday is a holiday, it closes the next day.

Admission is free, and the first floor has a tasting space called Star Hall.

The premium tour (1,000 yen) lasts about 50 minutes and includes two beers or two soft drinks. Reservations are required, online or by phone.

From JR Naebo Station, take the north exit and follow the indoor walkway for 8 minutes, easy even in heavy snow.

Free Visit vs Premium Tour: What’s the Difference?

Exhibition hall

1. Free self-guided visit

The second- and third-floor exhibits cover beer history from the pioneer era, early equipment and vintage posters. Korean signage is good, and a QR-code audio guide is available.

It takes only 15–20 minutes, easy to fit into any itinerary.

Premium tour

2. Premium tour (1,000 yen)

A guide shares behind-the-scenes stories of Sapporo beer, and the tour ends with two tastings, including the limited Sapporo Five Star.

Five Star beer

Five Star isn’t sold in regular stores, so beer lovers shouldn’t miss it.

Value tip: two beers alone cost about 800 yen, so the premium tour is practically a free tasting plus commentary. If you plan one beer experience in Hokkaido, this is it.

The Charm of Star Hall at the Sapporo Beer Museum

Star Hall

After the exhibits, head down to Star Hall on the first floor, full of old-world charm.

Fresh draft beer brewed on site is cheap here, popular with locals and travelers.

Three beers to try:

* Sapporo Five Star: deep, rich flavor, a limited edition available only here.

* Sapporo Classic: sold only in Hokkaido, clean and smooth.

* Sapporo Draft: fresh and classic, with a gentle hop aroma.

Simple snacks are sold too. Golden beer in a glass under warm lights is the essence of Sapporo.

Genghis Khan at the Sapporo Beer Garden Next Door

Sapporo Beer Garden

Leaving the museum, you’ll spot the Sapporo Beer Garden right next door.

Inside the red brick building, a buffet restaurant serves all-you-can-eat Genghis Khan lamb barbecue, a Sapporo specialty.

Genghis Khan and draft beer after the Sapporo Beer Museum completes a perfect Hokkaido day.

Waits are long in peak season, so book ahead.

Getting There: The JR Naebo Indoor Walkway

Indoor walkway

Public transport is easiest.

From the north exit of JR Naebo Station, a covered walkway leads straight to the museum without worrying about snow or rain.

Alternatively, loop bus 88 from Sapporo or Odori Station stops in front of the museum.

Note: you can’t drive after tasting, so use public transport if you’re on a road trip.

The Sapporo Beer Museum is more than a place to drink; it’s a way to experience Hokkaido’s history and pioneer spirit.

The free visit is fine for a quick look, but if you have time, the premium tour adds limited beer and deeper stories.

Hokkaido winters are long, but a glass of beer makes the journey special.
